Aftermarket tank petcock threads

A buddy of mine bought an Indian made aluminum fastback tank and he says all the threads are different. Mounting studs seem to be 8 mm instead of 5/16-18 and the petcock threads won't accept the standard petcocks. Has anyone here experienced this, and what petcocks will fit?

Yes, I did.

So you guys who have bought steel tanks have had no issues with threads?
Are the fuel taps 1/2-20 or some British thing?
