Hi People, let me preface this by saying my nearest Norton dealer is 3000 miles away so dropping my bike into the dealer for a service, tune or remap is out of the question.

My bike has under 1000 kms on it and so far I’ve upgraded my coils, leads, a couple of sensors, plugs etc. It’s running better but still far from ideal. I’ve removed the cats from my pipes but there was no noticeable difference there so I believe the next move should be to replace my stock exhaust and have the (Omex) ECU remapped.

I’m travelling to the UK in May and wonder where would be the best place to source a sports exhaust from?

Should I go direct to Norton? I’ve emailed them but still waiting to hear if they sell parts from their Donington headquarters.

If I need to go to a dealer to purchase pipes can someone recommend a good one in the North of England?

The plan is to unplug my ECU and take it with me to the place where I purchase the mufflers to have it remapped. Is this doable? If it's not I'm pretty well stuffed because there's no way I can take the whole bike with me.

Finally, roughly how much should I expect to pay for the exhaust?

Norton Website says 895 GBP for either short or long exhausts pair and 295 GBP for the decat section. Why not phone them and order it now before you go and pay by Credit Card. ?

All I can find on their website is clothing and accessories ??

Cycle Works in New Zealand can make a real quality pair for NZ$900 - quiet a bit cheaper and slightly more open than the Norton ‘long opens’. With the exchange rate you’ll be well ahead even with shipping.
With regards to the map - you can only load one of the four Norton standard maps for the Omex ECU. They work okay though.

Krazy Horse is a dealership in the U.K. that specialise in ‘exotic’ stuff. They even build full one off customs etc. They’re real petrol heads.
They are also Norton dealers and will ship parts worldwide.
In the absence of any sensible responses from the factory (which is sadly all to common) I would advise ringing Krazy Horse and asking for Phil. If it’s possible, he’ll arrange it. You’ll get a better response via phone vs email I think.

More than one option for u for sure, if poss book a factory visit for the Friday afternoon tour, have ur ecu soughted in morning whilst u collect ur pipes, staying night b4 a local hotel , those pipes would be serious excess luggage,so alternatively book a courier

Trouble is, if the factory aren’t answering his emails, it’s difficult to liaise with them...

Does seem daft no one replying to emails, I’m guessing & like to guess emails may have changed as they do have a change round of people swapping roles & of course coming & going, I’ve never had a problem on telephone or emailing or someone calling me back, anyway DBT mentions North of England ,dealer in North east at Teeside, & DBT keep an eye on de forum as there could be a plethora of 961,s at a bike meet not far from where u maybe ? ( maybe anyway ) and remember folks we got the “ April attack” session in 13 days time at “ Krazy Horse “ bury st Edmunds.

I thought I remember the factory posting they had a separate dealership on site there. Why not call the factory and inquire instead of waiting for an email. If you are emailing from the Norton Website, it could take months for a reply. Try an employee you might know, like "firstname.lastname@nortonfactory.com (possibly Simon?)

You can also buy from AF1 in Austin TX and get the remap there as well . They have a good website and contact us form . You can get the answers you need from the as well. There must be a UK dealer list at Norton .

rob.jameson@nortonmotorcycles.com try that email or warranty@nortonmotercycles.com. The second email is from Simon which I ordered de-cat and short pipes through. The first email is who took it from initial contact. All done very smoothly.

Hi - FYI I spoke to Rob Jameson a week or so ago after a warranty email was not replied to which not only gets my goat but also my dander up. He apologised and said that he has taken over the role of monitoring incoming warranty emails and seems a very knowledgeable guy to deal with.

Yep, that worked, I received an email from Rob today.

Hi,

I've been away for a few days but glad you had a reply. Rob is one of the most experienced people we have at Norton. Tough decision to take him out of production but he will add a level of experience and knowledge we have never had at the front end before, he was my go to guy with 961 issues internally.

Feel free to ask him all the hard questions I can't answer!

Simon

I received my decat pipe and short pipes the other day from Norton. Fitted them and went for a spin. About 150 miles. Friggin awesome. Totally different bike. No remap needed. It ran rough at idle for about 10 minutes then smoothed out to perfection. If you google omex the ecu resets itself. Actually all ecu's do.

So, you didn't do a ECU remap ?
Decat and shorties bolted on, and running fine now ? You kept the O2 sensors ?

Sorry, been away for a few days testing out the decat and shorties. Clocked up 1500km I think that's about 1000 miles.
No ECU remap. All on country B roads. Bike ran superb except after last fuel stop wouldn't idle and died at a stop sign. Stopped and reset idle sensor then fine.
At the moment I have kept the 02 sensors but have ordered the eliminators and will install same.

The decat pipe and shorties have made the single biggest improvement in the bikes performance. It barks like it should. Very crisp throttle response and heaps more, smoother power.
