So I was helping a mate tune his xs650 that he had just fitted a new ignition system to and the basic concept is an electronic pickup with an AAU that kicks in at 4000rpm. Wholey Dooley this thing was awesome!! Idled like a ship from 900rpm and quite sedated through to 4000 them BAM!! AAU KICKS IN AND IT WAS LIKE SOMEONE TURNED THE NOS TAP
Got me thinking, felt like a combat cam in the ole girl.
My point is, a linear curve with all the ignitions available for the commando gives a nice graduation of power but has any one tried a set up like this or know of a setup like this on the commando?

If it wasnt made by "Lucas", you might need to ask around other sites...

Haha.
Seriously thou, this thing had a kick in at 4000 like a h2 powerband.
Blew my feeble mind. I'm a bit concerned my mate on a 650 will kick my arse in a straight out drag off the lights.
Might need to look at me cam I think :D

Automatic Advance Unit... to save anyone else having to google it

- I have never been good with TLAs

Exactly like the H2 you reference, the bike with conventional flywheight/spring automatic advance will not have any more power at the top, just have (possibly) less in the mid-range, so the "light switch widowmaker power band" will not make the bike any faster. The old Kaws would scream... only slightly faster than the second place Commando in the Cycle Guide 1973 six way "superbike shootout", but the sharp transition to full power caught many riders used to tractor engines off guard. Worry not, the AAU alone will not cause the Yammy to be faster than you...

My XS is similar. I installed a 750 kit, did some sensible porting, retuned the carbs, have a MAC 2-1 exhaust and a Pamco Pete ignition.

The thing is a beast. My buddy has a stage 2 sportster 1200. The XS outruns him every time.

It really pisses him off. There is quite a weight advantage in my favor thou.

There is something awesome about the simplicity of the Pamco Pete system and the AAU.

Before I used it I was constantly fighting the points, I had immediate improvement after installing the Pamco system.

I have contacted Pete, and he will do a system for the Norton, but I have not pursued it any further.

Electronic assist to lower the current and preserve contact breaker triggering is like 50 yr's old technology and still available by online searches. Most if not all 'non' programmable electro ign kits have curves to suit more detonation prone cycles than Nortons, so their time adv curve has to be milder than what a Norton perfers. Jim Schmidt over came this with his Boyer by putting a resister across the trigger leads to fool Boyer brains into faster rise for faster turn exit power hit. The AAU works a treat by itself to me on my Combats - until the AAU wears out - which is by far the main reason electronic kits have a market. The worn out AAU only bothers the idle speed stablizing though, not the WOT power above a few 1000 rpms as bad AAU tend to just jump right to full adv above idle, so faster fun to ride on good traction surfaces but a pisser to creep around on loose wet slick surfaces. Lucas points don't seem to float in limits of Norton survival rpm so no electro sparker advantage there either. Some electro kits have a better coil pack for for spark current and that would be felt as more thrust per throttle. Power to mass will give the best of times and response of course.

Hey Brett. It is the pamco setup. It blew my mind too. So so simple. My buddy is talking about re-phasing his crank and dropping 750 jugs in there too.
Do you have any thoughts on what the commando version might look like? I was thinking a lot similar to the stock points setup but with the pickup instead of the points.

Yes it was going to look like stock points setup, just with 2 of petes triggers.

Tell your buddy to save his money and skip the rephase. I hear it is a lot of hassel for not much return.

The 750 kit was a drop on and showed huge returns. There is also a 1006 kit out there.

I made several ignition systems back in the late 70's after I bought my first Lucas-Rita and realized it killed the power.

I used a Chrysler igniton pickup and module. I used a 6 cylinder reluctor and ground off all but two tits. I turned the points cam on the original AAU to make it round and shrunk fit the Chrysler reluctor over it.

I sealed around the cover and where the wires entered the points cavity. Then I left the cam seal out so the AAU got lots of lube.
They ran perfectly for many years. Jim

Always full of good ideas, probably the only mistake you ever made was buying your first Norton
