I took the Norton on it's first ride in approx. 30 yrs. Wow! Heavy bike, lots of torque, with plenty of pulling power.

I get home and check fluid levels. Oil is normal, a little dirty. But still good level on deep stick.

I check the fluid level in the transmission. The level is fine but I notice a loose nut lying in the bottom of the transmission. I use a magnet and fished the nut out.

Before I go removing the transmission outer cover any thoughts? Or percaussions?

not sure about the nut - a pic might help.
but are you also saying you rode the bike with the 30 year old motor/tranny oil?
if so, think you are doing the machine serious harm until you change them.
and the tires!

Agree. Think Tin Woodsman.

Surely if you could see it, it must be in the outer cover, I'm guessing its 5/16 nut from the inner cover. If so, remove outer cover, replace nut, change seals and gasket, drain oil, and you should be fine.

A picture would be useful. The nut you found could be one of the 5/16-26 used to fasten the inner cover to the central case, or if it's small, like 2BA it could be the nut that participates in securing the clutch fulcrum pivot roller, in either case Norton didn't over engineer anything, so the nut you found may have a union card, but it sure isn't doing its job.

Open the case and find out why it backed off, get a new one, torque all evenly, go worry about something else...
