A new noise!

Had my bike out for a run yesterday - about 100k. It seems to have developed a new kind of clattery/ splattery noise. It sort of sounds like the hydraulic lifters that were in a car I once had (a six cylinder Holden or Vauxhall in the UK) it wasn’t doing it all the time, but usually on applying throttle after a deceleration on the downhill. Seems lik it’s up high, like in the rocker cover - but hard to tell when riding. No sign of it at idle.

Any thoughts?

Other than that it was a great ride and the bike is going really well. None of the previous issues

Now you have me paranoid, I took bike out for a 75mile run and swear I had a new kind of clattery noise coming from up high! I noted that if I shut my helmet visor the noise went away, so that's what I did. It doesn't get to the bottom of what the noise is but it reduces the stress of worrying about it by about 95% :)

Mark , your just closer to the action with them low bars that’s all !

Well your bike does have hydraulic lifters so there is a fair chance that is what you are hearing.

Check for loose nuts. My exhaust mounts have been known to come loose and I lost one of the bolts and 'captive' nuts from a silencer on one occassion. They now sport compression washers.

So today on the highway, doing maybe 65-70 I'm hearing a new high frequency clanging. Get to where I was going and start searching for this rattling chain sound. Pull on the exhaust, check all the clamps. Sounds internal. Uh oh. I'm royally fooked. Only happens during accel and decel. Not idle. I'm ready to sell to the first sucker that pays me. It was the damn ring on the flange of the exhaust. Sigh. The nuts always felt tight, but I guess that's because of the rust. Tightened those suckers up and the bikes quieter than its been for months. Good lord. How trivial and downright embarrassing. You can't really see it shaking but you sure can hear it. Funny, I get home and read this post. Oy. And I go around an wrench stuff on occasion too.

Check for loose nuts.

I check mine every day, mostly just for fun.

Has anybody noticed a white patina on their exhaust nuts?
I could have sworn that they were chromed originally.
Now they are covered with what looks like a white aluminum oxide patina.

Yeah. Sprits a little wd-40 every few days and that wont happen. Or buy stainless nuts.
