750 Crankshaft nuts

Hi folks,
the workshop manual has confused me!
I am re-assembling the crankshaft on my '72 and the manual advises me to put the 2 x long nuts onto the middle bolts.
This doesn't make sense, surely they should go at the top to make access easier. Does it make a difference?

My workshop manual says "The part No. for the 2 long top nuts is 23280...." I'm pretty sure I put the long nuts on the top. What manual are you using?

Stop! You're both right! My 72 manual calls for the long nuts on the middle 2, (tabs at the bottom) but my 850 manual calls for the 2 long nuts on the top. Go figure.
 
John Hudson and Mick Hemmings both say the long nuts should go at the top, in their rebuild videos.
 
I'm with Mr Hemmings then.
The top makes more sense. Thanks for your help!
