I was told that the 73 850 roadster came with 2 into 1 stripes on the tank and side covers Is this true? any pictures of what the 2 into1 stripes look like?
They are 2 into 1 stripes on the tank and sidecovers. I cannot pinstripe by hand but I did mine another way with excellent results. Prep the tank and covers with primer first and fine sand to 400 grit. . Then spray paint just the areas that will have the gold stripe with a good gold acrylic enamel. Go to your local paint supply house and get some 1/16 pinstriping tape and place it on the tank carefully in double lines where the stripes should be. Allow them to join together and overlap on the ends carefully cutting with an exacto knife with lite pressure. Then spray a light coat of black acrylic lacquer over the entire tank or side covers. Once dry remove the tape carefully pulling it back upon itself for self cutting action thus revealing the gold paint underneath. . Then apply your clearcoats. let dry and buff to high gloss. Practice the technique on a scrap piece of sheetmetal first. It is really easy to do with a little practice. Mine look factory and I can't freehand worth a shit.
Occasionally, you may see photos of Roadster side panels which have the single stripe applied down the rear edge of the panel instead of at the front, which is a fairly common mistake made by some painters!
Always ready to start controversy or confuse the myth...FWIW
My '74 (see avatar at right) has the original paint on the tank and has the stripes as described here but they are clearly done with tape and not by hand. It is silver paint, but definitely has a tape edge on it.
