73 750 frame

I believe those frames are interchangeable, but there may be a difference in the stand mounting lugs and perhaps the crossover brace tube underneath the front section.
 
I can't quite remember, but didn't the change the rake angle slightly & have to use different yokes?
The '73 850 & 750 used the same yokes.

No, the rake angle change was to the 850 frames.

I've heard of frames that had a three-digit number stamped on the headstock, but I have no idea what it is supposed to signify.

I have have a '73 850 & a '73 750 parked next to each other in the garage.
Although the yokes look the same from above, the bottom one, at least, is slightly different. The cast no's are different & the 750 has 2 holes in it rather than 1 on the 850, which is presumably for a damper.
So yes, you are right.
I don't know if I have the right frame for the 850 though, as I bent the original & the next one in accidents when I was younger.
