Anyone see a problem using a main gear box bearing that is open on both sides. The original bearing has a dust shield on the drive side. I know there is a seal but with the sprocket slinging dirt and water i guess the shield was extra protection from debris.

I think the OEM bearing is just a normal, unsealed bearing..?

I bought a single-side sealed bearing from OldBritts for $25 or so and I think it worked out great. IMO, that extra sealed side can do nothing but good!

Thanks Jordon Thats what i was thinking too, but i have a new open bearing, so there goes another three days for parts.

I don't see why it wouldn't work just fine, I'm just saying I'll continue buying the single-side sealed ones (they're cheaper anyway)!

If you already have one that's the right size--sealed or not--I say use it. No sense wasting money on new parts when you have something that's perfectly good already! Save your money for things that (will) break. :D

The open bearing is fine, you don't really need the shielded bearing.

What he said. I needed a replacement and nearly died when I saw the non-sealed bearing was $110.. I found the shielded one for $22.50 and I like it. That said, you should use what you have, IMO!

I have a '74, went to CNW for a ND sleeve bearing, they sent a
off shore brand rubber sealed both sides one. I complained and
they said that they had been using them for at least a year with
no problems. OK to use it sealed or unsealed.
Havent yet implanted it and I do have a double shielded on from
RGM in stock. Matt is unlikely to steer anybody wrong and the
idea of a fully sealed bearing does have its pluses.
...and its minuses.
I dont think the big ball gives any trouble anyway.
Any comments?

Installed the unshield bearing today i guess it be ok. The housing seal i installed doesn't seem to be the best quality not like the original. I could just about install with finger pressure. So i put blue locktight and installed i guess if it doesn't leak it will be ok. The bearing p/n i installed is 1654 zzc3 KYK made in Japan. Motion Industries the former berry bearing said this bearing is a sealed bearing someone removed the dust shields. Bought bearings from rabers they said this is the bearing they use. Didn't ask if they removed the shields. Steve
