Do you have this plate welded to the frame? If so, I think Walridge has the 70 parts. But they are too short, they need to be about 2" longer.

You can do the 72 upgrade, there are instructions on Old Britts http://www.oldbritts.com/38_200002.html

'70 cmdo side stand?

Just to confuse you, here is another possibility for a side stand for your 1970.

A previous owner of my 1970 roadster had changed the original side stand for a Triumph one - if I have attached the above picture correctly you will see it. I think this stand is from a T120; I was told by Andover Norton when I sent them this picture but I can't remember precisely what their description was - at that stage I was unaware that this was not stock, and was puzzled as to why the stock spring did not fit, so had sent them the above picture so that they could check it out.

It works well, and I understand that the original 1970 stand is a bit smaller and fragile than the later model stand - perhaps that is why the later model stand was made. The only problem that I had with the Triumph stand was sourcing a decent spring for it; the standard 1970 Norton spring is too long, and this set up requires the two hooks at each end of the spring to be offset by 90%, as opposed to the standard spring which comes with the two hooks on the same plane. Initially I hammered and bent the standard spring; which aint that easy - I probably should have used heat, but on my second attempt to get it perfect I wrecked it. Eventually I found a perfectly fitting spring at a motorcycle wreckers but it did take a bit of hunting down. Not every spring fits, as you need the spring part of the spring to be short enough to not foul on the bolt that secures the stand to the swivel part (that's another technical term - my engineering background shows...) as per stock spring, but total length required is considerably shorter than stock.

My 71 side stand is the one I consider the best. It is not just a lug welded to the frame tube. I found another one on Ebay which I put on a 73 I had. The stand brackets and arm were available from Andover but pricey. I have no picture and am not getting down there to take one. I believe the parts are shown on the Andover parts pictures.

I think it was Ron L that mentioned to me that there's a BSA sidestand that fits the 69/70 Norton bracket and is about 2" longer. It looks like the spring may even work. I've seen them on ebay, but not yet managed to snag one. Wish I could find the number of it.

My '69 side stand is a pain in the calf to put up and I must be off of the bike to put it down. OK; so I'm cheap (frugal), a piece of pressure treated 2x or 5/4 decking from a neighbors elevated porch project will do just dandy aneath your propstand. Put a slice in your pocket and another on your garage floor and all will be good. Works for me!

I don't have any trouble getting the stand down while on the bike, but like you say, keep a block of wood with you, you'll need it sometimes. I'm working on learning how to start it off to the side also.
