Been 20 years since I built a Norton/AMC 50's vintage clutch and going through my boxes of spares and looking at spares lists I notice variations. And I have forgotten.

(a) Some clutches have 4 friction plates ( engaging the basket) or 5 ( ditto), with the plain plates engaging the cub.
(b) Some have friction plates that engage the centre bub) whilst the plates that engage the basket are plain (reverse of a) ).!
(c) Some clutch back plates have inserts and have some arel plain and ditto for the baskets..( or clutch drums). Some have cork inserts, some are plain!

Seems \Norton then AMC fiddled a lot with combos on these clutches.

My 53 Norton ES2 came with 5 cork friction 5 steel and 1 cork insert basekt/drum. I have to switch baskets as corks are not available IMO. (>>)

Question : Can you use 4 friction plates or 5 friction plates interchangeably with any basket ? ( presume the clutch spring part number would
change)?

Any other tips welcome
