Trying to re-torque all 3 . The central down one bolt fit the Gordon 1/4 Whitworth just fine , and I torqued it down . The other 2 are barrell studs with their nuts to tighten down. . No fit with that Whitworth or my slimmed down King Dick socket on 2 4" extenders. No fit with 13 or 14 mm. either. So what size are these 2 nuts and what narrowed head socket do I need and how to order it. ?

I have exactly the same problem! Think I used a deep metric socket for the front ones. Have to retirque in the next few days, will double check.

I use combination spanner then torque wrench in open end at 90 degrees. hope this helps. same with under carbs

Not a spanner situation. Slimmed down socket that drops down into the 3 head holes between the exhaust ports. The Ref. No.-067918 is the central bolt , short , cylinder to head ,maker's or superceded part no. NM25313. This one bolt torques down well with the slimmed Gordon 1/4 Whitworth I have using an 8" extensioner on my 3/8 drive ratchet.
The problem 2 nuts are 06-7529 (superceded part no. NMT2017) that fit to studs 06-7561. Nothing (sockets) I've tried seems to fit over them. Perhaps they are wrong nuts ? Perhaps I'm nuts ? Flashlight down the 2 holes shows they are not buggered up but a bit rusty.

This is what I use as LAB said 1/4 British standard.

If the 1/4 W doesn't fit (too small?) and the 13/14 mm are too large, have you tried an SAE 1/2" ?

Best.

sorry. my mistake. thought you meant the tricky ones to torque under the head

I said 1/4" Whitworth, 0.525".
1/4" BS is 0.445".

Hello Torontonian
Just took a couple of quick pics of what I use.
I use the socket shown on the right hand side of the images it is 1/4W and 3/8" drive.
This is a thin walled socket but I think this is normal for 3/8" drive. I use this with the short extension bar shown and a 3/8" to 1/2" convertor for my torque wrench.
The socket on the left hand side is a 1/2" drive shown for comparison and as you can see is a much bigger socket and will not fit for this use.
I obtained the 3/8" socket as part of a relatively cheap (approx. £14) set of Whitworth sockets on ebay.
Andy

Thanks Andy. I am stumped on what to do so will take advice . I've tightened down the central bolt and all the other head bolts but the 2 of discussion won't take a socket to date. I'll try the 1/2 Inch SAE tomorrow. If nothing works I will get a grinder to sockets to make thin walls soon.

A box spanner isn’t a regular ‘wrench’. It’s like a socket, but made from tubing, so has thinner walls. RGM do sell the correct one shown below. I‘m sure you have these in the colonies, and I’m intrigued as to what you call them! However, I suspect finding the correct 1/4 Whit one in general hardware stores may be tricky.

Yes, they get rusty due to the heat in that vicinity.

Use a 6-point socket, 1/4" drive. They have thinner walls. work to get the best fit between the nearest sizes of various type. As long as it's 6-point you WILL get one to fit well enough to torque down, even if you have to tap it over the rust.

Is there a possibility that the previous owner cross-threaded some incorrect nuts down on there?

3/8 drive 6 flank socket should do the job well. I would also ba applying plenty plus gas/WD or alike first
