28 degree timing hole Mk111 (2011)

Trailing through some past threads on timing marks, I thought I'd have a quick look at my timing marks , so I thought I'd just use the timing hole in the r/h crankcase to see if the timing marks were out in the primary hole, when the crankcase tool sits snugly in the crankcase with the lock pin engaged, the primary marks are out about 3 degrees, has anyone any idea if the 28 degree hole in the flywheel is accurately scribed?

I've only ever checked one and it was bang on. I would think the majority will be the same as it's machined in and isn't adjustable. Then again we are talking of 1970 QA :wink:

cool, thanks.... I did not know how to use, I guess the 28 degree slot is just centered in the case hole

There is a threaded hole on the r/h side crancase bottom the tool is threaded into the hole, turn the engine round to , maybe 34 degrees btdc, put finger pressure on the peg, slowly and gently turn engine toward 28, when it reaches 28 the peg will engage with slot machined into the crank, this should lock the engine at 28 degrees. Very simple to use, hopefully the machined slot is bang on!

You don't really need a tool-as it's easy enough to see when the slot is lined up in the hole.

Apologies for the old thread resurrection. With the timing pin installed in my mk3 the indicator on the primary side inspection hatch is showing 30 deg and not the 28 as expected. Assuming the timing pin is most accurate rather than the plate on the primary and therefore i should time engine at 30 deg with strobe and points?

The Mk3 timing scale is adjustable.
