2015 norton sport 961 question mk2?

Hi guys
I found a 2015 norton 961 sport. The side fairing doesn’t say MK2. Is it safe to say all 2015s are mk2? Is there a way to look up by the vin ? I have the vin
SAYCMM019FY005230

the headlight feels like it’s metal. A friendtold me the mk2s were all made with metal rather than plastic buckets.

Hi Dave, I own a 2015 961 CR - it is a Mk 1. If the bike does not display Mk2 on the side of the airbox then it is’nt.

It is a bit complicated but there is no real delineation between Mk1 and Mk 2, just an iteration of changes that eventually led to a Mk 2 designation. A 2015 Mk 1 will have most of these changes but there will still be work to do to get it running properly. I believe Mk 2 designation commenced in 2016(?).

It is not MK2 , but that is not a bad thing. MK2 started in 2016 and Yes , by 2014 the headlamp shells were metal. If you want a Norton 961 , you may as well buy it. There are not so many available and Mk2 can have problems too. If all goes well with TVS in the UK , they may start making the 961 again . You can still get parts for the 961 from Norton :) !

With only 500 miles on it, it is almost like buying it new. It looks like a decent price to me. Considering how few of them are available here in the US, I don't think you will find a better deal at this time.

Thank you everyone, I bought the 961 for $13k. Its a very clean bike.

I now want to find some aftermarket parts for it, or OEM. Im specifically looking for the 2 up seat, a chrome or stainless front fender, and/or a complete set of white tanks / fender / side covers... thanks for your quick responses, it made my day a lot easier. Most important, I want a 2 up seat and the rear pegs.

That might be more difficult . The dual seat had a different frame , it may be possible. The rear foot frames you can get , but the body work with the seat may be more difficult to fit. Maybe email Norton and ask them. Maybe someone else can chime in here.
 
The sub frame is different on the two seaters. The single seater just ain’t designed to carry the weight. Trying to convert it is therefore not a good idea.
 
Congratulations, Dave. Hope you enjoy the bike. I noticed it has the South Bay Norton exhausts. You might want to find out if your ECU has had the appropriate map installed. If the seller can't tell you, you can now get the factory software (it used to only be available to dealers), SXCar, that will tell you which map is installed, and let you install others if you wish. I don't know if the software and maps are available anywhere for download, but if not, several folks here on the forum can send them to you, if you ask nicely :). If you go back through the posts here, you'll find all the info, plus a lot more.

Exactly. The dual seating commando has a gusset welded in place to support the passengers weight.
 
Does the VIN number on the 961 also tell the code of the bike? On a car here in USA, the VIN tells the year, engine, color etc.
I know the 961 VIN tells the year etc.

But I’m interested to know if a 961 VIN tells the bikes original color, series (MK 1 or MK 2) (Dominator, cafe racer, sport, SF) bare cast aluminum engine or black engine, polished or satin chassis parts etc.
Can anything decode the bike originality and possible options?
 
I wonder... I wonder, if TVS were to be approached in a positive way that they would care to hand over the production records of the 961? We have agreed between ourselves that there couldn't have been as many produced as SG claimed, and TVS are only going to produce another 40 or so, it would be a great document to tabulate for posterity and might assist current owners in determining at which time Norton changed parts suppliers etc.

I can't see why they would object?
Would be no skin off their nose how many bikes SG actually built.
It would also be a great way (requiring no effort on their part) for TVS to build a well of positive opinion with Norton customers.
 
The MKII came out in 2016. The headlight bucket and a few other items were "upgrades" to the MK1, including the tranny and a few things upgraded, according to my dealer, the clutch and the bangoless valve covers.
