OK! So the Commando was delivered yesterday. I had seen this bike on Kijiji and decided to buy it. The fact that it was on the other side of Canada did not deter me. I lined up a trucking company and had it transported from Newfoundland to Alberta. I was one happy man when she fired up right away. What a beautiful song she sung to me! Only disappointment is the number on the crankcase has been removed. Not sure of the story but I am trying to find out. I guess the important thing is she started. :D

Great. Welcome. Now the fettling begins. Keep us posted.

A real possibility with no number on the crankcase it could be a factory replacement after the original broke due to main bearing failure..combat. Once sorted out a combat is a fun, mostly reliable machine. Mine has 51,537 miles on the odometer.

Yes I totally agree. That was my very first thought upon seeing them. Winter is already upon us here so no riding for awhile. I plan on stripping things off and giving the bike a good cleaning. First I have to get some heat in the garage, the bike is sure to be a lot of fun but not so much when it hits -30 and no heat!

Were factory replacements with no numbers used if warranty work was completed? If someone removed it intentionally they did a good job because it looks as if there never was one there.
Numbers on the frame and gearbox match.

It looks as if it's never been stamped.
The cases could have been replaced at anytime during the bike's history and not necessarily because of any warranty work.

Solid face where Magneto would go would be 73 cases . 72 have plated blanking plate over large hole there . Both internal webbing. Which is the main thing .

That makes sense. The Combat puked it's mains as they typically did, then got a new set of replacement cases in '73. Shop that did the work didn't re-stamp them. Some shops do, some don't.

Welcome Dirt2oil.

I have a late 72, Aug build date, and it has the solid timing side case, also superblends and non-combat head.

I also have a late set of 72's (210xxx). Casted over mag boss. I had to replace a very early set, 200xxx, that had a bad idler and other stripped areas (drain plug, etc). Cover over mag boss.

I've two Combats with low down rear breathers and CHO heads plus disc brake and both cases were solid cast over the old magneto area. They both had flat rollers from factory, not superblends and could of been reused. Nice HyRyder bars and tiny tank in common HyRyder Burnt Orange. Cdo's are modular for fitting what ever seat and covers and tank ya like.

Welcome. It looks good and sounds good from the video.I'm sure you'll enjoy it

You can always just get yourself a set of the right size number stamps and do it yourself. I used a cheap set from Harbor Freight. Suggestion - be very careful to not get any of the stamps upsided down. It's really easy to make that mistake. Don't ask me how I know.

Nice bars dude.

Hope you have some period duds to go with them.....

Chris
New bars were easier to find than period duds. Well I actually didn't try to find the duds!
European style bars on the way from Commando Specialists as well as master cylinder rebuild kit and ss fuel line.

Perhaps I am slower than I think but I don't quite follow the comments about the solid cast over mag area. Can someone post some photos showing the difference or point me to some that could help me understand the differences in the cases? Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

"Don`t ask me how I know?" Say, Ken, were you trying for ultra-authentic factory spec quality control recreation -for concours display? L.O.L.
Earlier cases had provision for a mag` drive in that spot [timing chest extension] later series deleted this.
