1972 Combat drain plug

I noticed my drain plug (this is the small '72-'73 type) does not have a magnetic insert. Parts book says it should be but I never changed it. Probably a good idea to have the magnetic plug. Has anyone else seen a non-magnetic (= just a bolt) drain plug on a '72?

We still have power outage here -- tree across road and down on wires about a mile away -- so I must be bored! Running computer on 1968 ex-FD Wisconsin big single generator. Edit: Oops - It's a big Briggs and Stratton not a Wisconsin engine

My '73 has just a simple coarse threaded bolt, no magnet insert.

Nice generator; LA DWP did a brown out on us here on Saturday - 107* reported, everyone's AC running. Thought about the generator, didn't dare openthe fridge, we went to a movie instead.
 
I bought a magnetic plug for a '72 from Phil at Fair Spares. They are out there, should be a common item.

We lost power for about 6-8 hours, it is a good thing I replaced my UPS batteries with bigger ones, they lasted through, got to watch the news on TV and cooked burgers on the BBQ, hard times, especially with a couple of Cuba libres :wink:

My 1972 Combat had the engine drain plug without magnet. It now has one with a magnet along with magnetic oil tank drain plug and magnetic gearbox drain plug. Even the oil filter has a external magnet.

Hm hadn't thought that deep into it Jean, butt see your point : )

I built Ms Peel over some years under pure diesel gen set power but saw the errors of that way with limited fuel storage time and show stopper trouble in severe cold storm conditons, so now use propane and forget about it. Old magneto points twin air cooled 12 kw.
 
I'm putting an extra one dangled on end of oil stick which will also allow real oil level measuring on 750's. Just don't think mags get but maybe half the metal dust that forms sludge and wear particles. I should figure out an oil bypass filter to really clean up out insides.
 
Doesn't it bother anyone that the exhaust is pointed right at that gas can???

Gas can normally lives in the garage. Thought it was a good match with the generator red paint for the picture so I placed it where it is. Generator was not running at the time. Soooooooorrrrrrry there I go setting a bad example again.
 
Back to the subject of the post....... Old Britts has magnetic drain plugs available for both sump and oil tank. They are on my shopping list for the next time I place an order.
