I have read a great deal about the dangers associated with the sidestand mount on the 1971 Commando.
What is the mode of failure? Does the pivot break or the circlip fall off or both?

Thanks,
Ed

I think the answer is yes to both. My 71 still has the lug but the stand is missing. There are mods you can make to the bracket. LAB just posted up pics for me.
I was going to install the stock stand but if the lug were to break off it would be bad. I just purchased a center stand from Old Britts. I will stick with that and pass on the side stand.

That was the first modification I did to my commando before I became a mechanic. I threw it in the rubbish.

Has anyone here on the forum had the pivot post break? I ask because it was recommended to me to drill and tap the post for a small bolt and washer to remedy the problem. This was from someone whose opinion is respected on this forum but will remain anonymous for now.

Well ... drill and tap would work. (although it would be A LOT of work. As in centering the drill bit, and without a press it would probably be at least a little crooked.) Plus, your weakening an already POOR design, IMO ... that's why Norton changed it. In fact, Norton changed A LOT on the Commando during its production run, because of poor earlier designs

If your determined to fix it, fix it right and fix it once.

I actually have the replacement bracket. My issue is that I don't know anyone local that I would trust to grind of the existing mount and weld the new mount without butchering the job.
I can drill and tap but can't weld.
Any recommendations for a shop in Northern VA area? I don't want to pay $150-$200 each way to ship to a remote shop.

Thanks,
Ed

I just welded a new side stand mount on my mate's 850 Commando if you know someone with a mig welder its not a big job to do, getting the right angle for the mount is the hardest, the new mount has a very thick block where the stand mounts to and sleeved for the bolt, the new mount has a longer plate so that it can be welded in the right position and hopefully the right angle, the one I cut offwas just a butchers job and no where close to being orginal side stand mount.

I guess the moral o the story is [ if you cant do it properly, dont do it at all. ] Nothing wrong with a good centre stand that has been" modified at least 2 times".

ps ;look for past posts on these problems.s
