Does anyone know why the Crankcase Blanking Plate was held on by 2 X 1/4" UNC screws and 1 X 1/4" UNC set screw and nut ( drilled for a split pin to stop the nut coming off I suppose) instead of just threading the case for 3 X 1/4" UNC screws?
Thanks David

Maybe it was part of the original electric start plan?
Lab will know the answer no doubt

With the actual starter motor (that they never fitted) in place I think it would have been either extremely difficult or even impossible to fit/tighten the innermost starter motor drive housing fastener on the outside of the crankcase?

The motor drive housing at that position would probably have been threaded for the setscrew but that's just a guess.

I did away with it and used a Nyloc nut, I believe the split pin was used as in the 70's it was the best method to stop the nut coming off

Thank you all for your replies. I will thread this hole so I can use three 1/4" UNC bolts. I can then remove the plate without first having to remove the timing cover.I am mounting one of Mikes XS reed valve breathers to the plate and if I need to inspect it for any reason it is a simple matter to remove the plate with out first removing the timing cover.

Thanks for the illustration of the aborted starter assembly, I've never seen that before. It seems N-V made plenty of the crankcases in readiness for this, and presumably they also made corresponding numbers of the timing cover? If they did what happened to them all?

Cheers,

cliffa.

I think you'll need to put a larger bolt in the one for the split pin as it's a clearance hole for 1/4 inch, or at least mine is now. I was going to do the same but have gone with a nylock nut. On the subject of blanking off holes, what do you think to this one for the old breather hole?
