1970 Roadster

I just thought I would see if I could figure out how to post a pic of my bumble bee!

Now that's a nice yellow. BZZZZZZ Thanks for the shots!

I added a "g]" to the end of that first code to bring it up.

That looks like a good 70 model. Only thing I can see is the front mudguard may be a 71, but it's hard to tell. Otherwise everything I see looks right. How many miles on it and are you the original owner?

No I am not the original owner but I have had it for about 10 years. It had most of the hard to find parts when I bought it and it was sold to me as an "S" model but when I started doing my research, I realized that my Serial # was just out of range for the S models. Oh well. I have slowly put the bike back to stock. I had TC Christiansen redo my cylinder head a few years ago and I just finished a total gearbox overhaul so I think it is good to go for awhile. Regarding the front fender, I am running a 4.10 tire so I am guessing that I have a later model fender?? If i run across an earlier fender I would pick it up but I havent really tried to make it a total resto.
BTW, I also have this thing:

My front tyre is a 3.00-19 Avon SpeedMasterII as original. Got it from Walridge, kind of hard to find and the tubes are impossible to find in a quality one. I think everyone got rid of the early mudguard because of the larger tyre. You can get the early fender from Andover 060583 in SS. But then you need the early stays and fork bracket too, the geometry is totally different, they may also have the other parts if that's where you want to go.

Hi,
Do the side frame panels/covers on the earlier bikes really slant upward that much or is that just the way they appear in those photos?
Will they exchange with the later produced bikes?

Here's my 74, yes I too like yellow.

GB

PS. Yes I run an airfilter its just not installed in this photo.

GB,
The side panels do slant up quite a bit. If you install the decals while the panels are off the bike one can easily mess them up. Further, I don't think the 69-70 panels will fit any other year. For one thing they relocated the ignition switch from the side panel in 71.
Ron

The 69/70 side panels are fiberglass, I think the later years were all metal. Yes, they do slant up quite a bit and the logo should be parallel to the ground, not the top of the panel. The right side one is held on with a dzus fastener and the left one is mounted with a spacer and bolt/nut, although I have heard of some with the dzus on both sides. They both mount at the rear off the battery tray and the frame with spikes and rubber grommets in the panel.

Unfortunately, I've never seen a parts diagram for the 69/70 bikes that have these panels and the central oil tank, although the spares book lists the numbers in a supplement.

You may find you have to take the carbs off to get the air filter on and off. I've never been able to do it any other way.

You can see the various models here. http://www.classicbike.biz/Norton/Broch ... chures.htm

I have an odd, related question:
Are the "spikes" brazed onto the frame?, I have not seen a frame stripped but I am curious.

Vince

No, the top spike is a bracket off the rear web and the lower one is off the battery tray.

Cool,
Thanks, since the battery-tray is going away on my bike and I can just unbolt the other bracket and fill the holes-in my life just got easier.

Thread Hijack Warning:

Dave,
I thought the '71 fender was still the chrome, narrower fender. I have three different styles of fenders here and just as many different types of stays. Maybe it is time I took photos of all of them and we finally do a comprehensive thread on fenders and stays.

Russ

Russ,

oh brother. Fenders, stays, front, rear. Somewhere I made a list of all the different front mudguards and stays for the 69/70 models, I think there are about 3 different numbers for the Commando (pre-Fastback), S, R, Fastback and Roadster. I'll see if I can find it.

Then there's the rear mudguard. I have 2 different ones in my possession. I think there were only 2 styles, early ones (mine) mount off a bracket between the shock tops and the later ones mounted off a plate attached to the web between the rear frame loop. Not sure how the Fastback mounted, I'm sure they had a different rear mudguard too.

Some of the stays were painted, some were chrome, as far as I know all the Export mudguards were chrome.

Andover is making the early narrow front in SS 060583. I guess he has the stays and bridge too, because they are different.

I'd be interested to see your collection.
