]Who knows, for certain, which of the vent access pipes, on the top of the oil tank, goes to the front, left of the motor, and which goes to the air cleaner? Been a while and I can't find anything in the shop manual.

Thanks, but that is not the same as the 1968 tank.

Mick

Did you scroll down and read the paragraphs where he explains the differences between various years for each oil line?

Yes,I checked that out, and I am pretty sure which is which, but not positive. The top of the 68 tank is different than any others, and one of the breather hoses was attached to the air cleaner. I think it was common to have this breather hose vented to the atmosphere, as later ones were?
Some old timer will know for sure. ( OK, I collect SS too :-))
I have a good photo of the top of my tank but I cant post it here.

I'm confident bill (Windy) has it right in that other thread, the spigot on the 'tower' is the one that normally goes to the airbox (or preferably fed into a catch bottle to prevent the filter becoming contaminated) regardless of the tank type.

I thought we were all old timers here with one or two odd exceptions.

Why not? :?

I don't know if my observations on the 69/70 central oil tank (S and Roadster model) will be of help, but on my central tank, the tube from the timed breather on the left side of the engine goes to the top hat thingie spigot, or in later 69/70 oil tanks right beside the top hat thingie spigot. The central tank had a breather internal that went into the air filter and came from up inside the top hat; the 68 Fastback, and R model did not have that arrangement, so I really can't speak to that but I bet it's similar somehow.

However, if you look into the tank, the line from the timed breather should just dump into the oil tank, and there should be another spigot? that probably goes into the air filter or maybe off into the wilderness that comes from a line that ends up inside that top hat, maybe there was no pollution control in 68. Not sure.

There's no problem venting the oil tank (proper) breather into the air, but be careful where you point it, oil will be coming out of it at some time. I chose to vent my oil tank into a catch bottle and haven't been happier with the lack of oil spreading around. Oil is worse than horse s**t, it gets on everything including your boots.

I can supply pics of the 2 early central oil tank variations if anyone is interested.

I think I have the right information now, thanks all.
Wish I had it ready today, 72 degrees out along the seacoast, great riding.

If you're using F degrees you must be in the usa or associates, where are you? I should have gone out yesterday, but my wife had a big party and it was almost 70 here in VA. Missed my chance (to impress the babes that were here too). Oh, Man, and it was my birthday too, what a disappointment. I guess there's always next year at 70.

I am in Haverhill MA, it's on the NH border. I rode up along the NH seacoast in Hampton, North Hampton, Rye to Porthsmouth, kind of a nice tourist trap small city. The road up runs right along the Atlantic, my favorite local ride.Got a coffee in the square and checked out the assortment of bikes there. Nice day brings them out. Good day to sip coffee in the sun and lie about your riding skills.

Happy Birthday Dog. Riding keeps you young... you'll be 68 next year.

I've never been up that coast along NH. I'm sure it's nice. Been to the Cape and Boston. If you want traffic free riding come down here in NW VA near WV and it's not bad, at least week days. Just give me a shout and you've got a room.

Hi,
The correct way to fit the pipes is engine breather to the plain pipe next to the filler neck. The vent tower at the front of the tank goes to the airbox or to atmosphere if you prefer.
Regards,
Martyn.

Thanks Dog,

I have ridden there a few times, great country. rode back from the Barber Vintage Festival last month and spent a few days in Richmond, a friend of mine lives in The Fan. The Science Museum has a great exhibit on guitars, right now and thru the first of the year. I highly recommend it if you like to waste time strumming.
I will keep your offer in mind. Same offer if you want to ride up here. After all, riding a Norton in, New England, is something everyone should do!
