My friend owns a small Harley repair shop, he has taken on a 1954 Indian trailblazer that needs to be rewired and a few parts replaced, mostly cables.

After some searching I have found it is really a Royal Enfield 700.

Where would a good place be to get all the cables and an ammeter?

Seems as I am his only British bike friend, he volunteered me to help.

It looks like this

Re: 1954 Indian trailblazer

Hitchcocks in the UK are the main source of Enfield parts these days, great service and coverage.
Online parts lists too.
Lucas ammeter could be interesting, lots of repro stuff around though.

Based on the 700cc Royal Enfield Super Meteor.
54 is a bit early for a Trailblazer, be a 55 at least ?
Nice bike.

Matt, 8 amps deflection either side was normal, back into the 1930s even.
With a 6 volt system, thats only 48 watts...

Where findeth ye this one ?

Every Man & his dog , east of the Serengeti River used to make HIS OWN cables . !

If you don't have the original, finding all the right fittings to get it perfect can be quite tricky.

You sometimes see all sorts of things cludged into place, and know that just wasn't how they were....

Via Google Pics , ' lucas ammeter ' . Link is above under . :D find a bit of stuff as pics have " Site for this Pic " which is often a further indulgance in times of yore .

Now , in N.Z. in 70s , Jap stuff all came ready made , so a few major stores carried fittings , or half of the fittings . :? . Steel on Alumn. Brass on Steel levers , or it galls
sticks frays and doesnt endure . Theres a link above for the bits & a How too .Cleaning of the flux ( use bakeing Soda ) & lube are important . Ready made cost double and
range was rather limited . Spares there only sketchy avaliablity , often annual dealer orders , pre Fax & plastic payment .Late seventies 1/4 price & 2 weeks delivery if you
had direct access to uk .

The country was built on the 44 gallon drum & number 8 wire . If you couldnt get it , you made it . Or got it made . England was 6 months away , in the 50s .For non millionaires .

The 700cc Enfield was a good fast bike, however I believe the crankshaft was nodular cast iron?

Well, http://www.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/home, was THE place to go.
Great website, great service, fast shipping, excellent products, HIGHLY recommended. The OldBritts of the Royal Enfield world.

I'm going to drop the parts off at his shop in the morning. I also did some research for him,
turns out this bike had a sidecar on it at one point, the owner wants one again.

He said it was a Watsonian. Turns out they are still in business. http://watsoniansquire.wordpress.com/

Making cables is not hard once you get the hang of it, Venhill and Flanders carry parts and cable making kits. A solder pot is a must to make reliable cables (I learned the hard way) however if you don't want to buy one a 1/2" black iron pipe cap and a propane torch for heat works great, the solder remains molten for quite awhile so there is no need to rush...just need to make sure the pipe cap/solder pot is very secure for safety, I used vice grips clamped in a Jawhorse. also used plumbers solder and flux from a hardware store.
