Hi, I'm Tom and I recently aquired a '69 750S as a rolling basket. So far so good until i hit the wiring. I didn't take it apart so i'm not shure of the location of the "accessories" i.e. the horn,rectifier etc. I have the wiring diagram but little else. Head light bucket no problem; from there on back......... I have the original harness and it is unmolested. Any help would be greatly appreciated and pictures would absolutely wow me.

Nice to hear you've got what sounds like an original clean bike. With the wiring harness intact, if its the original I suggest that you need to examine the connectors as soldered joints age and become brittle. This is particulary important with the coil terminals and condensors. I would recommend you fit an electronic ignition systems i.e. Boyer, TriSpark, Pazon as these use most of the existing connections but delete the condensors. In addition a solid state rectifier would be advantage as the old silicon diode plate rectifier tend to get unreliable with age and were talking 40 years here. Providing the wiring is intact , clean and not messed with and the connectors are firm there is no reason why it could not be reused with confidence. Its a simple harness and the factory schematic for pre-71 is pretty easy to follow.

The horn is mounted off a triangular plate off the bottom rear of the battery tray, next to the front of the rear fender and is the hardest thing to get to on the machine. The rectum fryer is mounted on the left side of the plate between the front of the shock mounts on a 1/4-28 hex bolt and screw and the capacitor hangs off a spring below the rectum fryer. Anything else? Pictures are available.

Thanks, I'm headed in the right direction. I don't have the triangulated plate that the horn mounts to, just a small tab that hangs down with two small holes; probably the ones the mounting plate bolts onto. Pictures would be a great help. Also i'm not clear on the mounting spot of the condenser pack(black, two posts, two mounting tabs,( approx 2 1/4" l x1 in tall) I have two "condensers" mounted beneath the coils but the wiring diagram makes no mention of them.
As I delve further into the harness I have found some retrofitting of wires but all seems to be in order.
Funny, i can wire an old harley from scratch half asleep in about three hours; It took me that long to figure out where all of the components attached on the Norton and I wasn't even drinking!
God bless their over-engineered British souls.

I'd like to see some pictures also. Especially the location and orientation of the horn bracket assembly and the mounting of the front portion of the stainless rear fender. My fender has two holes that match the triangular horn bracket but do not butt up close enough to be captured by the horns' bolt and nuts.

Ok, had some time to piece it together a bit, here are some pics. Don't know if the triangular plate goes under or over the mount on the battery carrier. Not sure about the positioning of the horn either. There are 3 small holes in the front of my rear fender I am not sure what they attach to, the center one has a backing plate on the inside of the fender. You can see why the horn is the first thing to go on when assembling.







Here are some pics of the capacitor and rectum fryer too, notice the harness is not in position, just showing mounting of the capicitor.

oops I thought you meant the rectifier and capacitor, here is a pic of the coil pack mount. The small capacitors mount on the little tabs at the far left and right and the coils mount in the large holes of course with the HV wires towards the back I think.

No oops. The pictures you sent are perfect as I asked about all of those things. I can't thank You enough.
If You could indulge me for just a few more questions; I have the coils and small capacitors in correctly but where do the capacitors get plugged into?
Also, I am unclear about where the condenser pack attaches to the bike( black box 2 1/4 Lx 3/4 wide x 1 1/8 tall, 2 terminals top, 2 ground wires) the wiring is not an issue, just the positioning of the box itself.

Looks like the double white wires go to the minus on the coils, the blk/yel wires go to the coil plus, and on to the respective capacitor. The double red wires I think go to the Allen bolts on the head steady (gnd). The blk/yel and blk/wht terminals go to the contact breakers. Here are some pics that may help. The condenser pack, I am not sure what you are talking about, it may be an after market item or voltage regulator that replaces the zener, I do not have anything like that? Or if you have a newer than 69-70 it could be the assimalator which is not on the 69-70?

Well, it looks identical to the installation on mine. As I said the horn was one of the few items - apart from the rolling chassis and the drivetrain that is NOT missing on my bike. The bolts attaching the horn and the bracket look pretty much untouched.

Heres the capacitor mount system. These capacitors store the current to the points when the points are open.

Is that condenser pack a new/older or just another variation on the small round condensers I have on my 69?

I now realize that i have a slightly different harness. My point connection plugs are grouped with one alternator wire next to a plug containing 2 horn wires and the other alt wire. and next to them are the ZD wires. Nor do my coil terminals have jumper wires to the condensers. The pack that Rennie shows is the one i have (same as my Triumph) but the connections and grounds are on a leg past the ZD leg. I'm sure that is a updated version of the individual condensers.I'm starting to think I would do myself a favor by getting a new proper wiring harness.Daves coil arrangement is the one I have. I have a 1970 Norton shop manual that shows the other arrangement. But at least I now know where all of the hardware is supposed to go.
