wires, white with red stripe??

Postby madass140 » Wed Jan 18, 2012 5:03 am

on the harness near the head steady is two identical female push on spade connectors, white with red stripe
also further back there is another white with red stripe and with it is I think a white with purple stripe,
any ideas what they are for?
looking at a diagram the only white with red stripe is in one of the H/bar switches that doesnt seem to go anywhere.

White with red is the starter circuit. White with purple goes from the ballast resistor to the coils, IIRC.

But there wouldn't normally be two white/red wires with female spade connectors in a Mk3 harness in that area. The Mk3 harness has multi-pin block connectors.
Are you sure they are not white/purple?

exactly as I described , including positions, just behind the head steady are 2 identical white with red, and further to the rear is another white with red and with it is the white with purple which cant be for the ballast resistor being way back there. I have the 2 ballast resistor wires in their normal position.

That's odd then?

Can you trace where the other ends of those those wires go to?

I thought (from memory) that those are involved in the kill button circuit at the handlebars? I think there is a small bundle that gets displaced when you install a modern electronic ignition...

White goes to the pushbutton kill switch, then white/yellow from the kill button to the connector under the fuel tank and then continues as white/blue to the ballast resistor, then white/purple (colour not shown on the wiring diagram) to the coils (-)
White/purple is redundant with EI.

White/red is starter pushbutton wire (no connection to harness pre-850 Mk3)

There you go.

I wasn't anywhere near a wiring diagram, so "i think" and "I thought" were used.

Never assume!

Please bear with me on this one. New to Norton and need help before I burn up some wireing.

I have a 72 with this same combination of dead headed connectors. Red/White and White/Purple, But more importantly, I am totally confused by my switch wiring.

Let me explain. When seated on the bike. The right hand switch has 5 wires and are currently not connected, just hanging there. They are
1) Blue/Red,
2) Blue/White,
3) BluE
4) Purple/Black. ( (horn maybe)
5) White
The switch has 2 momentary buttons and a 3 position paddle switch. Up, down, middle.

When Seated, the left hand switch has 2 momentary buttons and a paddle switch that looks like the right side but is only 2 position, middle and up. There 6 wires.
1) Green/White that leads to a connector that goes into the headlight bucket and changes to Blue/Red,
2) Green/Red that leads into this same connector and changes to Blue/White.
3) Green/Brown goes to rubber connector block and changes to Blue
4) White/Yellow to the same rubber multi connector
5) White
6) White/Red

Unfortunatly for me the previous owner seems to have had a penchant for removing stuff. He also drill an extra hole in the headlight bucket between the 3 lights and the light switch.

I appreciate your help.

Three things that might help you.

One. You need the factory wiring diagram. Someone recently posted one.

Two and Three. If you have a bunch of time to kill you can read through these. Will they help? Maybe.

You probably want to go into town, and find a up to date Jap Bike store,
With a full spares department, a clean workshop, and kean young mechanics.
And ask them if theres a Grumpy Old Bloke out in the Hills, who knows how to fix Real Motorcycles.

The switch housings often get swapped over left to right as yours seem to be, not that it matters as it's up to you which way you fit them.

1) Blue/Red,
= To the headlamp bulb dip (low) beam connection.

2) Blue/White
, = To bulb main (high) beam (also high beam warning light).

3) BluE
= To headlamp toggle switch

4) Purple/Black. ( (horn maybe)
= Correct

5) White
= To harness white

1) Green/White that leads to a connector that goes into the headlight bucket and changes to Blue/Red,
= Green/White is the R/H blinker/turn signal circuit so it should connect to other Green/White wiring.

2) Green/Red that leads into this same connector and changes to Blue/White.
= Green/Red is the L/H blinker/turn signal circuit so should connect to other Green/Red wiring

3) Green/Brown goes to rubber connector block and changes to Blue
= Light Green/Brown? Connects to Light Green/Brown (then on to White)

4) White/Yellow to the same rubber multi connector
= Connect to White/Blue (ignition feed wire to ballast resistor, or does it have electronic ignition?)

5) White
= Harness white

6) White/Red
= Unused.

Thanks I do have the wiring diagram and figured out the majority including the possible swap over of controls. The flip switches seam to wrong though. Or I have a bad switch. Because the side with the turn signal wires only has 2 position and other side has the 3 position.
