What price is fair?

Postby Youngbutaclassic » Thu Feb 04, 2010 9:01 am

Hi all,

I have a 1974 Commando Interstate. It belonged to my father and despite some effort, I haven't the time or skill to look after it properly. An enthusiast has offered to take it off my hands and I know they love their bikes so I'm glad it's "going to a better place....".

The question is, what would be a fair price and I was wondering if you could help me out. I will probably knock a bit off whatever you suggest. I've included some vital information below.

On the up side:
Generally ran, starts up 1st time more often then not.
It has a racing caliper and brand new master cylinder (a hundred times better then the original).
Freshly rebored and honed by a well respected classic pro.
New Norvil front adjustable isiolastics.
Electronic iginition.

On the down side:
38K
Smoking on left side when hot.
needs swinging arm bushes etc replacing.
Very stiff clutch (I've taken the whole thing apart but can't work out any thing wrong).
electrics are generally old and need replacing. In general it would benefit from a full strip and build.

Any suggestions would be very very helpful.

Thanks,

M

Photos would be very helpful. Spend some time on the Ebay completed auctions to see what is selling and for how much. It gives a decent guide. Third, let us know where you live in case "we" are looking for a 74 Interstate!

All of the above.
You probably want to go into town, and find a up to date Jap Bike store,
With a full spares department, a clean workshop, and kean young mechanics.
And ask them if theres a Grumpy Old Bloke out in the Hills, who knows how to fix Real Motorcycles.

And yet another good reason for members to add their location to their profile!

As moderator, I know Youngbutclassic has been posting from various IP addresses within the UK, so I would take an educated guess that's where both he and the bike are?

Any Commando in good condition would most probably find a buyer if it was offered for sale for approximately £5,000+ GBP in the UK at the moment, and going on Youngbutclassic's brief description, I'd estimate the value to be somewhere around £3,500 (+ or - £500) GBP at the moment.
