Hi,
Does anyone know of a sign writer in the UK (ideally in the south) who can do tank pin striping with a brush the old fashioned way? My tank has clearly been re sprayed in the not too distant past & is in good nick, but is unlined. Although not correct (I think) for a 74 roadster I like the "D" shape lining.

Gday Myford, I like to do painting of tanks etc myself. Pin stripes are another story and have used the masking method, but theres an item on ebay called the Beugler pin stripe paint applicator. Ive seen these demonstrated and are nothing short of bloody brilliant, they,ve dropped in price too, $99 bucks US gets you started and can make a pro out of anyone. An alternative to paint is to apply automotive vinyl striping yourself. If it gets buggered you can peel it off and replace it. The 'D' works well with 1/4 inch stripes. Auto paint stores carry it in many colors.

Thanks for the replys chaps, the striping tool looks good, I've heard of them before, but they must still rely on a steady/skilled hand, especialy on curves? The stick on stuff crossed my mind, doesn't it wrinkle on the curve? If all else fails I'll give it a try. I was thinking more of the type of guy who does old time fairground artwork.

I have a friend here in Canada who learned the craft as an apprentice. I know what you're talking about. Now a-days it's all done with vinyl with a computer and cutter machine. He still does his handy work on boats. You might try asking around marinas for a guy who hangs off the side of a boat and paints the names. It's truly an art to behold.

The vinyl tape doesn't wrinkle going around a curve if you stretch it around. The striping tape I use is a 3M product with a double stripe. Its exactly the same gold color as my 'Norton' decals, which are also 3M vinyl. I striped mine in the standard '73 pattern - starting at the knee indent under the logo, around the logo and down along the top edge of the tank, coming around the logo on the other side.

After you've got the stripe on, peel off the vinyl backing, and its ready to topcoat.

My roll of striping was $16 for a hundred feet. I've done it three times so far (glass tank once and steel tank twice), and I've got about 85 feet left.
