Stuff in Fibreglass tank

Postby GRM 450 » Wed Oct 05, 2011 3:59 pm

I bought a 1971 Ducati RT from the US.
I looks like it hasn't been used for many years.
There is this stuff in the tank which appears to have settled in the low side (on the side stand) and it's like resin or dried out fuel.
It is dry, breaks fairly easily and has no smell. It does burn easily with lots of black smoke.
Any idea what it is?

My guess is old Keram coating that failed in new age pump gas.
Throw yourself at the ground and miss!

I don't know about that. Kreem (if that's what you meant) is white and never fully cures, remaining kind of soft and rubbery.

I'm going with old dried up fuel. Bike was probably parked with a gallon or so of gas in the tank, and that's what is left of it.

Nope, not dried gas, I have been into a lot of tanks that have sat with gas in them, you don't get that much residue left behind from just gas. That has to be reminents of a sealer.

Thanks hobot, Debby and bwolfie for replying. It's not Kreem as Debby said, it could be crap resin that someone use to try and fix the leaks. It doesn't matter as I have got it all out and have to fix the tank cracks anyway, just thought someone in the US may have seen it before. Regards Graeme

Its failed epoxy coating of some sort..........Caswells is probably most likely, but all the epoxy coatings are pretty much the same.
