Rev it up good, strobe it, adjust stator plate (if needed), rev it again and double-check.

Why make such a fuss?

This has always worked for me...revving beyond max advance point for a couple of seconds is enough to understand if it's right or not.

I generally sit on the bike and lean over to look at the timing marks...saves all those trench marks on the garage floor

A thick rubber mat under the main stand seems to absorb the vibes and stops the bike moving about. Watch my video, I've done nothing to prevent the bike from moving, yet it stays perfectly still because it's on a rubber mat.

I do the same as L.A.B. except I never use the centerstand. Let the isolastics do their job! A piece of two-inch lumber under the side stand (late-style) gives an easier angle to aim the strobe. Rev, check, adjust stator at idle, Rev again, check, repeat if necessary. Easily done with no assistance. Worked for the last 25+ years.

From reading the posts here it looks like a Boyer ignition bike should be revved to 5000 to check and see if the mark is still on.

As per the Boyer instructions. If you look at the advance curves published earlier in the thread, you can see that that's what you have to do because that's where the Boyer curve goes flat.
