Steve Maney race accident

Postby ML » Tue Jan 26, 2010 3:16 pm

Just in case you may not have heard, Steve Maney went down in a horror smash at the Phillip Island Classic on Saturday afternoon. I had just been talking to him with a couple of fellow Commando riders and Steve was really pleased with how well his bike was going. It was the last race of the day the International Unlimited (England vs New Zealand vs Australia) all the big bore bikes on a packed grid. A TZ750 Yamaha lost its drive on the wind up to turn one, the bike behind stacked into it, glanced off and took down aa Triump and Steve's Commando speared straight into the wreckage. One bike blew up in a fireball and Steves wen bike end over. Amazingly it looked hardly damaged but it could be bent. Steve was airlifted to a local hospital and has a number of broken bones. I'm going to check which hosptal Steve is in and go and see him when visitors are allowed.

Sorry to hear that. You never know when you're going to get taken out while minding your own business, doesn't matter if it's on the street or on a track.

I sure hope the injuries are not very significant beyond the seriousness of multiple broken bones.

I spoke to Steve's wife yesterday mornming.

He is out of Intensive care now, his hip has been plated. He also has a broken shoulder, collarbone and a punctured lung.

He won't be fit to fly home for a while though Val said she was hoping to fly out to see him this week.

If I hear any more in the meantime I'll let everbody know!

How old is he? That stuff takes more time to heal when you are middle aged.

Oh man, hope he recovers well. As an xray tech I've seen tons of broken collar bones and hips. A broken hip/pelvis is a pretty serious injury with major risk of infection. The surgery is far from fun... Hopefully in a few months he'll be good as new.

Mick, when you visit him, would you mind finding out the phone number to reach him at hospital, and posting it? I've know Steve for a good number of years, and I'd like to give him a call. Thanks.

Thanks for posting. I don't know him, I only know of him but I'm sure many others like myself appreciate and respect him for all he's developed and accomplished and share in the regret of this accident.

Ken, please let him know that all of us wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Gday All, what a spectacular weekend at the Island. Sadly it was greatly marred by the smash involving Steve. I had spent about an hour before hand talking to Steve anything Norton related, even giving him a hand to fit his fairing. I thanked him for his huge effort and cost involved in coming to Philip Island, as to all other teams very much appreciated. Steve could only be described as one of lifes gentlemans, easy to get along with and eager to share his knowledge. Loved to talk about racing back home and some of its characters, seeley920 & little bro Cormack rated highly. The photo below was taken of Steve and I about half an before the accident. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Another highlight of the weekend also was to catch up with Mick(ML). We were standing together watching the last race race and witnessed the carnage. In the fure Mick we will share many rides to come, preferably all on Nortons. Thanks Mick & keep us all posted

Hi
Thanks for letting us know about Steve. Wish him well. Hopefully we will see him back racing with us this season.
Any chance of a write up to let us know how Steves weekend was going before the crash?
Thanks all the best Chris
