I'll have to add my 2 cents here.

For the last few weeks I had a flooding carb, and then a dead battery ontop. The flooded carb made for a very grumpy but rideable bike, sometimes one cylinder - when the battery died down things got down right ugly. Much as you have described - backfires, kickback, won't run above idle... nasty.
I literally rolled into the drive - popped the charger on the battery, swapped the float bowl (bad needle seat) and the bike was like new in an hour. :D

I am running a 3phase alt but a tiny battery - 3amp - I didn't charge the battery all winter and left the headlight (Halogen) on last week for 1/2 hour, then did alot of gridlock city idling. A night on the trickle charger has the battery back up to snuff and the alt keeps the charge, but the alt in city traffic wasn't enough recharge the abused battery.

Good luck!

I haven't needed to. The battery was just completely run down from lack of maintenance and carelessness. So far it has been keeping the charge just fine, but I can confrim that boyer gets weird when the juice is low.
