Every time I smoke from the left pipe I start to sense my front brake is pulling to the right. That's when I know it's time to stop smoking from the leftPipe.

OK, Dog...I see where your're coming from. I wonder if it would be improper etiquette to post a thread to see how many Nortoneers smoke from the Left Pipe before tearing it up?

A couple of times a year mine smokes big time from the left pipe...enough to keep the mosquitoes away for a week. The rest of the time it doesn't. I figure it has something to do with sitting on the side stand and whatever position the engine stopped. As long as it runs good , there's no inspiration to tear into the head...

Ugh my Trixie Combat alternated smoking on each side then would quit a while
but now return to LH on starts til a few miles down hwy I'm told then only hints when on throttle. Will just live with it till fouls plugs then put on a spare head and if that don't do it re-ring and hope for the best. Mean while Combat head will get anther going over, ugh.
Throw yourself at the ground and miss!

Im wondering now when i pull the head off should I only do the guides and valves or replace the springs and the whole 9 yards and plus I will be doing new rings. Im leaning to the latter. And just to say I like the pipes that are on it now they sound good and dont look to flashy, does anyone know the performance difference vs the pee shooters and what I have now. Lastly hows every one mounting the side covers without the air box to help hold them?

Just to be AWKWARD , Id go RETRO and fit this type of ' Silencer ' .Nothing wrong with whats on it if you dont get arrested though . :D

Image

NOW , dont get ahead of yourself . :P INSPECTION . Service Specifications . etc & so on .Crack all the bolts loosse then back of then remove .
NOT one at a time .
Dont forget the one that hides up inside the rear underneath . THAT ONE is the first priority , and job . Coustomiseing a spanner to fit .

Youre looking for excess slack , and scour marks . ( presumably a valve seals slipped , youd fit new seals , at least. Maybe . )

The MANUAL has free Lengths for Valve Springs , and tolerances . Guides could still be a tight fit , to Valves . MAYBE .

thats wot youre dismantleing it for . Strip , inspect . CLEAN . inspect . Check Fits , and inspect for abrasion , galling , scouring .

Inspect seating area on valves & seats in head. IF theres enourmous or severe pitting , youd cut them , have them cut .
Any O/Haul shop SHOULD be able to manadge That . ( We Hope . No baboons though please ) HERE , the guide fit , if slack to valve
is seen to ( New Guides )Std ? Bronze Intake , Iron Ex. ( for longer wear , matched service life ) tho decadant types use Alum. Bronze all round .

Just post pictures of the bits here , and we will all give you acres of confuseing advice and encouragement . :D

ANY Copper gaskets or O rings need anealing before fitting . GET lots of clean rags , and old newspapers for under it stripping,
you can throw the top layers away every 5 minutes if need be . Can save a lynching from footprints throughout the countryside .

Get out or Print Off a relevant secrtion of the MANUAL from the Tech Thingos FIRST . or they'll be trouble .& Learn it All First .

NOT as you go .
The one rule to the exception , is theres the exeption to each rule .

The side cover for the oil tank mounts on the tank with two small bolts at the top and a rubber grommet at the bottom the battery side depends on where you get it. Mine was a remake so I welded the strap to the cover and used a zeuss fitting off the frame to secure the front, the rear I used the upper frame peg to locate it then installed another frame peg below to secure it. Here are a couple of pics, if you want I can get some pics of it off so you can see it better, let me know.
