screw size?

Postby pelican » Sat Jul 10, 2010 5:55 pm

I've been trying all day to get the mini screw in the drive sprocket, but it won't go. Unless the parts book is wrong I definitely have the right screw (same as gearbox inspection cover). I lost my thread gauge so I was wondering if anyone knew the screw size so I can tap the sprocket? Goes in at an angle right?

I have had this issue every time I deal with it. The mainshaft tends to interfere with the angle of the screw and the screwdriver. The screw goes in perpendicular to the surface of the gear face which is cupped in the area. Somehow I eventually win though. Have you had the gear off and tried to put the screw in to see if it is a bad thread? If you run a tap into the gear you will have to have it off anyway cause of the mainshaft interferance.

JICYDNK. The nut has a champfer which goes toward the gear and matches the cupped surface where that damn screw goes.

It should be the same as the gearbox inspection cover, 2BA I think. Which is real close to 10-32 if you want to re-tap it, not that I am suggesting that in any way. It does go in at a slight angle with the sprocket face. I didn't have any issue with mine going in.

Hey, I think I did try it off the bike when I bought it last year, but I can't be certain. Wanted to go the lazy route by checking the thread because it's less work than taking the nut back off . Guess I'll keep trying.

I'd be willing to bet you have the right screw. That one is just a total BIOTCH. I've spent upwards of an hour or more getting that one in - 15-30 minutes, give up, walk away, another 15 minutes, try again later, etc.

Just keep at it and don't hesitate to walk away for a beer or a night's sleep. Eventually it realizes you're not gonna give up and it goes right in.

The wicked little peckah....! (greetings from Bahs-stun).

haha, yes, I was putting it in straight, then crooked, would seem to start then I'd turn like an 1/8th of a turn and it'd be back out, switch to the second hole, repeat...give up and take a break, go back and try all the above again, give up again and take another break.

I'm going to wait a few hours till it's cooler outside and just keep trying.

Once it's in I tend to plaster a bit of silicone seal over it. Little sucker GONNA STAY IN, dang it.

Best of luck. You'll get it. Just takes time and patience. (easier said than supplied, I know.)

well, I don't know what the deal was? Paint in the way? Rubbing on the retainer? Anyway my bolt stripped, tried my backup bolt in the other hole- stripped too. Pulled the sprocket off about 1st thread in each hole stripped too.

Having bad luck with this drive lol, first my chain clips, now this

Didn't have a 2ba tap, but I had a 10-32. It was threading easily by hand through the back so I ran it through, and the threads cleaned up nicely. ordered more screws. At least they are cheap. Hopefully the replacement will go in easily now, and I'm definitely going to use some blue loctite!!

If the hole in the retainer is not exactly inline with the screw hole in the sprocket, it just won't go and the threads can get munged up. So even with new screws, go the extra length to check that hole. I get right down there with a flashlight and varify its position. That big homemade socket makes it easy to bump it one way or the other with an electric impact (a tool I use alot around the primary).

OK, so it is just not me? Had this disagreement today. Pray tell, what size is the nut on the sprocket ? Didn't have a deepwell to get it off, so I was just going to buy a cuople of correct size screws and pray. I'd much rather remove the sprocket, chase the threads and do it proper,

It's like 1.47" 1.5" is the closest size

screws came today. Thought I would let people know the 10-32 is just a little too big. Screws thread in fine, but there is just a slight wobble. Some thread sealant should be sufficient. Hopefully next post will be problem solved haha

Wait, you retapped it for 10-32 and then got some new screws?

What size were the new screws? 10-32 or 2BA? I'm hoping you got a 10-32 screw. Might cost a few pennies at most.
You probably want to go into town, and find a up to date Jap Bike store,
With a full spares department, a clean workshop, and kean young mechanics.
And ask them if theres a Grumpy Old Bloke out in the Hills, who knows how to fix Real Motorcycles.

no, the new ones are the stock 2ba. I thought about getting 10-32 when I felt the little wobble, but everything I've read says they work interchangeably.

here is the difference - 2BA is 0.185" in diameter whereas 10-32 is 0.190". The pitches are 32 vs 31.358 threads per inch.

You guys think there's enough of a difference to matter?
