Roadster side panels

Postby FastFred » Sat Jan 09, 2010 8:02 am

LOoking at a '71 Roadster that seems to have those S type side panels on it that are at an angle (or was it just the decal at an angle?). Do Roadster side panels fit/interchange with those S shaped panels. Are the bracket attachments the same?
Thanks.

FastFred, The S-type panels are only suitable for the S and the First roadsters from the same era, The panels are a different shape and have a different mounting, they will only fit if you have the appropriate battery tray and the centrally fitted oil tank, they also require an additional hole in the rear main tube plate for the top right side dzus fastener. There are some photos of these in some recent posts titled; '1970 Roadster references and detail pictures'.

The 'S' type panels would be correct for a 1970 Roadster, could this '71 Roadster actually be a late 1970 model?

Think that is the case.

The side panels are at an angle, be sure to put the decals level with the ground

Just read in Roy Bacon's book that a 1970 Roadster is an S with Fastback silencers (peashooters). Is there a database that states exactly whether the engine/frame numbers were S type or roadster?

Not to my knowledge. However you could contact either the NOC or VMCC, as they both have access to the remaining factory records.

I have a list that I found years ago online, but have no knowledge of how accurate it is, take it for what it is worth, but it lists some serial numbers, and I don't know if they are the start, end or individual machine. Anyhow:
Feb 68 126125 First Production Machine
Mar 69 131180 Fastback
Mar 69 131257 S with Camshaft Points
Sep 69 133668 Fastback with camshaft points
Sep 69 134108 First Wolverhampton engines (P-suffix)
Mar 70 135140 Roadster
Jun 70 135088 Last S
Sep 70 ?????? Fastback MK II

My 69 S is s/n 132030 and does agree somewhat with this list. I am pretty sure that they made series of S and Fastback and Roadster within these serial numbers, and there seems to be no accounting for which are which.
