Removing Rear Wheel

Postby t-lil » Tue May 12, 2009 10:36 am

Hi...sorry if this sounds basic...but I need to remove the rear wheel on my 75 norton commando, which I have never done before. Any instruction or things I should be aware of would be greatly appreciated!

thanks so much!

1) Put the bike on the centerstand. Tie the centerstand to the front crossmember so it cannot collapse.
2) Slacken the lower right hand shock mount bolt.
3) Wrap a heavy wire around the rear frame loop ending in a hook on which to hang the caliper. (If you still have the original hook you can eliminate this step)
4) Remove the axle (right side).
5) Remove the spacer.
6) Remove the right side chain adjuster. Lift the caliper off the disc, sliding it off the lower shock bolt, while inserting the adjuster between the pads to prevent them from falling out.
7) Pull wheel off the paddles of the sprocket.
8 ) Extend side stand and tilt bike to the left so it is supported by front wheel, side stand, and left centerstand leg. (This is why you tie the centerstand! )
9) Remove rear wheel from beneath the fender.
10) Return the bike to resting on both legs of the centerstand.

At least that's how I do it. YMMV!

The spacer should be part of the caliper plate?

(5 & 6) Slide the caliper mounting plate (with the caliper still fully attached) out of position, insert the chain adjuster into the caliper slot to hold the pads apart, invert the caliper and plate, and hang it on the seat loop hook or tie it to the seat loop if the hook is missing?
