I am in a quandry

I am in a quandry

Postby chrisf1 » Wed Nov 11, 2015 11:42 am

Hi again everyone as you can probably see from my previous posts I have a triton running an AMC norton box and have just been offered a triumph pre unit gearbox, from back in the day I have no experience of the norton box at all, as I am quite close to having all my primary side off to sort out my centre stand I may consider putting in a triumph box can anyone advise me of the pros and cons for each of them as to have all the engine, box and transmission from the same set does seem a more sensible idea also I prefer the speedo being run from the gearbox are there any problems I am likely to encounter, all comments appreciated many thanks Chris

I would think that keeping the engine system all the same brand and close year match would result in a more trouble-free mating of the components.

However, if the bike already had the components mated successfully, it would come down to the cost and available play money.

The AMC box was more desirable in specials in the day. I don't know why, perhaps because it looked a little bit closer to a manx Norton?

Personally, I have always liked Triumph gearboxes and found them trouble free even when coping with a 908cc Weslake racer.

The Triumph box is also easy and cheap to convert to 5 speed.

But, you already have a Norton box that works, so I can't really see anything to be gained by changing. It is not a quick job as the mounting points are different, so you will at least have to modify your engine / gearbox plates, you may have to make new ones.

I think the AMC change feels better.

Nine out of ten epidemiologists agree that it is actually cooler to have an AMC or BSA box on a Triton, rather than a Triumph one.

after deep thought and consideration i am going to stick with the norton box for the moment but i am building another pre unit engine for which i may well use a triumph box uprated to 5 speed when i can afford to finish it
