Problems with 100 links final drive chain.

Postby pierodn » Fri Feb 24, 2017 11:48 am

Hi.
i have the 21 stock engine sprocket with a very good new 68 links primary chain (bought from Andy).
Stock gearbox sprocket (19) and rear drum sprocket.
With the new primary chain the gearbox needs to be all ahead to have a chain play of 5mm up and down.
The bike is on a stand and the rear tire dont touch land; the rear wheel is noff course all ahead.
In this way i have difficult to fit the 5/8 x 3/8 100 links chain.
I need one pitch more, with 101 it joins fine.
The question is: if i go down the bike and touch land with me on the chain stretchs out so that i can join the 100 links?.
Thank you
Piero

How are you checking the primary chain tension? Remove all the slack out of the lower part of the chain by putting pressure on the kick start lever, then check the slack.

No, remove the slack with the mountings tight. That is, remove the slack for checking the actual free play. You may find a bit more adjustment is available.

Hi,
I will do it.
A good chain play is 5mm up and down, or less?

5mm is ok. You can make it smaller if you check the slack in many locations by rotating the assembly around, insuring the chain doesn't go tight.

This is a problem when gearing is changed.

The primary may need a crank link, without the correct adjustment on the primary the rear
will be a problem to get right.

Any crank link fitted should be riveted in the right way round, see old posts.

Hi Andy,
I am not sure to have understood.
What gearing was changed: primary chain has 68 link and clutch wheel and cranckshaft sproket are standard one.
The primary chain works well and turns right, the play is 5 mm up and down.
The final drive chain needs half link, 101 insteed of 100.
I have a new final drive chain with 107 link so it will be easy to remove 6 link.
But the bike is on the stand and the rear whell is on full extension and dont touch land.
Maybe if the bike is down with the shock absorvers compressed i can fit the rear 100 link.
Thank you for letting me understand better.
