Speedometer drive for 1966 A65/A50

Postby illf8ed » Sat Jan 24, 2009 9:59 pm

What is the correct speedo drive number (stamped on the inside) for 1966 A65/A50 (rear wheel drive and 18" wheel). I'm using a Smiths SSM5001/03A 1600 speedometer.

Thanks,

David

The Smiths application list for that year says: "5330/111" to match the "SSM5001/03A" speedo.
The 5330/111 gearbox is listed as 21-10 (or 2.1:1) ratio so would be correct for a "1600" turns per mile instrument.

However, the BSA parts book for '66 lists the drive gearbox as: "1.25:1" (BSA part 19-9217) to match speedo SSM5005/01. So there could have been an early or mid-season change, as a 1.25:1 drive gearbox would almost certainly need to be used with a 1000 turns per mile speedo?

Hi L.A.B.

Appreciate the part number for the speedo drive. I referenced Rask's website below for the SSM5001/03A for 1966. I happenned to have one of these and want to put it on my '64 Cyclone competition. I've changed the rear wheel to the type that has the speedo drive although my engine has the speedo drive from the engine on the underside of the timing cover.
