Hey all
long time no talk - been mucking with my mikuni settings on my 850 - not sure why as bike ran OK, but was bored, and found that the "prejetted" mikuni 34 VM as supplied by Sudco has different base/supplied jetting including a different slide cut away (2.5) than the victory library mikuni publication (panics?) recommendations. Sudco stock is 240 main, 35 pilot and 2.5 throttle cut away - victory states for 34VM carb 20 pilot 3.0 cutaway and 260 main.
just wondering if the sudco is more of a generic setup and panics is what is best (or at least a better starting point)
reason i'm asking as i can chnage all the jets to either setting, but wonder if purchasing the 3.0 cutaway would make the bike run better??
any thoughts - and please don't say get a Amal -(beat you to it!)

If the gas mileage and response are both good leave it alone.
IMHO 2.5 is generally more rich than you need for an 850, but individual engines & riders vary. |

plugs always pretty good, nice toasty brown/tan - but acceleration seemed a bit flat, though it might of just been from 1 carb as opposed to two - and it was really cold blooded when first started
i ended up raising the needle clip by 1 notch in the sudco setup and put a slightly larger pilot in - less cold blooded at startup and seems to accelerate a little better (maybe....), but pops/coughs a little occasionally (once every 10 or sotimes) if i blip the throttle while at idle |

| Maybe I'm being too literal, but if you raised the needle CLIP, you lowered the needle itself, making your jetting leaner, not richer. Is that what you intended to do? Is that in fact what you did, or did you mean you raised the needle (by lowering the clip)? |

nope I made it a little leaner as i mentioned - seemed like engine ran a little rich (since the cut away on the slide supplied by sudco was less (2.5) than recommended by panic's info (3.0) = meaning a little richer running in the lower throttle range.
not really sure how much a difference it made - but is a 1 kicker for most time cold/hot and accelerates smoother |

The Unapproachable Norton Commando
At the end of 1967 the Norton Commando was announced.
The Norton Commando was greeted with a certain amount of scepticism because on first sight the commando appeared to comprise of the old Norton Dominator twin cylinder engine mounted at an inclined angle in a set of new cylinder parts.
It was not realized that the new Norton Commando Isolastic method of engine suspension damped out all engine vibration and produced a machine which had uncanny smoothness for a vertical twin. In due course the critics were silenced and the Norton Commando had the distinction of being regarded as the first of todays so called superbikes. There can be little doubt that the original design concept of the Norton Commando has proved correct, since comparatively few modifications of any real consequence have been made since production commenced during 1968.
Now nearly 40 years later Norton Commando riders like us are a breed of our own, and as far as we are concerned its still more fun to go for a blat on the old Norton Commando, and fast. As a Norton Commando owner and enthusiast, my goal here is to promote and give credit to those who keep the Norton name going.
It is more deserving to give credit to the Commando itself, for after all these years it continues to be respected. The original Commando designers like John Favill are those who deserve the credit for developing this incredible motorcycle.
The Norton Commando Roadster and Interstate of the late seventies, never died. Although the Norton Villiers factory dispersed the tradition lived on. Today Kenny Dreer in the USA is developing the new 952 CC Norton. What a great looking bike this is, and its engineering is still based on the original layout. It will be interesting to see how the new 952CC Norton does in todays tough motorcycle market. One thing is for sure, I would own one if I could afford it.
