Part no 061955 Front wheel spacer

Postby Diamondjet » Fri Jan 01, 2010 7:24 am

Can anyone enlighten me as to what the front wheel spacer on my 1973 850 accomplishs? I'm in need of a replacement for a front hub I'm lacing up and am curious as to what they look like and what the need for a spacer in this position is for. The picure in the parts catalog for part # 06-1955 seems to indicate a round tube with flanges on each end? Does anyone have a picture they can post? Obviously I'm thinking of fabricating one rather that waiting for delivery and having to pay a lot of postage for a simple piece.

Along the same line, what is the spacer for between the steering head bearings in the steering neck which holds the triple tree stem?

Thanks.

If the spacer wasn't fitted, then the centre spools of the wheel bearings would be forced inwards when the axle nut was tightened, leading to rapid failure of the bearings. And the same applies for the steering head bearings.
