Norton Commando Mufflers

Postby Bazz » Tue Dec 29, 2009 3:05 am

I fiited a pair of "Emgo" reverse cone mufflers to my 1973 Commando a little while back, but have found one has cracked near where the header pipe connects to the muffler. I know of other owners, with the same brand muffler fitted, who have experienced the same problem.

Commando Specialities in the USA are advertising a pair of "Seamless Norton Commando Reverse Cone Pea Shooter Mufflers" on their ebay site with a buy now price of us$119.95. From the pics and the description they look to be well made and as such hopefully not likely to suffer the same problem as the Emgo mufflers. The price looks good.

Has anyone fitted fthese mufflers and if so what is the opinion as to quality?

Cheers

Cracking at that weld is a common failure.

My brother fitted a pair of the Commando Specialties silencers to his 750 last Summer and he's very happy with them. He says the engine woke up and pulls better than ever with them. The exhaust note is very nice also. I wouldn't expect Asian chrome to be very durable but time will tell. Well worth the price.

I have these mufflers and header pipes on two seperate bikes, a good friend of mine is running them on three Commandos. Excellent product for the money. The only thing not worth a sh*t is the muffler clamps. I use stainless band clamps from Grainger instead. They look a bit industrial, but they sure as hell don't loosen up.

This combination fits better than any others that I have installed, including Emgo up to Viking and everything in between.

I have no financial stake in Commando Specialties...

I have the Emgo Dunstall replicas and have not had a problem. The Commando Specialties are most likely to be an excellent replacement and at that price you can't go wrong.

I didn't keep the old stock mufflers when I replaced with the "Emgo", so can't answer that question.. However, the replacements bolted on without any problem.

Thank you all for the feedback. Hopefully, the ones supplied by commando specialities , being USA made will be of better quality than the Asian made Emgo.

Cheers

His headpipes may be USA made, but the mufflers are made in China. At least that's what it said on the box.

I seem to recall that when I first viewed the item at the sellers ebay store, it said they were made in the USA. .This reference is no longer there ,but the site says "our own brand" and "we specified that all welds would be ground smooth......".
The price landed in Aus is no better than for any other Asian made products.
