Newbie alert

Postby xbskt » Thu Jan 26, 2012 9:03 pm

Hello to all,

New to this list but not to Commandos. I've been on other lists for a while but I'll give this one a try for a more focused Commando approach.
I built up a '70 Roadster (known as XBSKT)in the 90's from a basketcase that was stock all the way around. Made the mistake of selling her in a moment of weakness and miss her all the time.
I started adding to the pile of leftovers and after a few years had a 70 S (XBSKT 2) mocked up and ready to be buffed and molded into cafe racer I have in my mind.
I don't have any pictures of the first bike that are digital but I'm keeping a photo diary of XBSKT 2's rebuild.
Have a look if you like.

I usually don't have tooo much to say but will offer an opinion if I think I can help. I have a pretty good grasp on things Commando but there is always a better way to do things so I'm always looking for a good tip.

I guess that's it for now. Glad to be here and look forward to more.

All best,

Jeff

Good start in progress. Is that a Thruxton lurking there in the background? Any mods on it?

First off, you have to put where you're from, how old are you and how many bikes you have to join this little club of misfits.

Just kidding. Welcome to the forum.

Actually, I'm not kidding. We need to know everything about you,,Jeff

Hey, I'm a leper, too!

Been lurking for a while reading up. I just got back the '74 850 I owned about 10 years ago. Still don't have it set to go yet, but I keep working on it. It's a nice, original bike. There is a lot of great stuff on this board. The picture is from last month when I was cleaning the clutch and primary. I've done a Tri-Spark since, and lots of cleaning and polishing. Trued the wheels, new tires, sleeved master, pulled the forks and cleaned the internals and worked on some other bits and bobs. Got some of those Premier Amals, new wheel bearings, new final-drive chain and a few other things to put on the bike yet. Can't wait to get it back on the road and take it on a long ride.

Xebasket case ski hooks make me feel a kindred spirit as about half the time I've had Commando's over 12 yr they were hung up like smoked ham hocks. On Ms Peel's deal to adapt Water Buffalo rear hub I hung frame vertical, verified by bubble level, then with tranny installed and chain hanging straight measured for spacers to get sprockets in line and hub centered.

I flat lucked out to have procrastinated a few yrs ago to get re-started on Trixie Combat after rod bolt let go about coasting at 50 mph.

OK so here goes nothing.

It's been a while since i made a master list:
I'll start with Asian and work the way the world spins.

2001 Kawasaki ZRX1200R. (for sale before I kill myself)
75 and 76 Honda CB750 (one cafe and one project)
73 CB175

1969, 76, 77 Ironhead sporster (I have a soft spot)
1948 Servicar trike custom
1975 Shovelhead chopper (hardtail, kickstart, suicide clutch, jockey shift, open belt primary. JUST PLAIN NASTY)
1995 HD Ultraclassic. Lots of miles but it's the go to bike for SWMBO and I. Rode cross country and loved every mile.

!948 AJS model 18 350 single (the very definition of basket case...someday)
67 Triumph TR6R chopper (built it with my son so that's a keeper)
70 Commando S (XBSKT 2)
71 Commando Roadster parts pile from Ebay (numbers match with a title)
72 Combat Commando (one owner bike saved from outside storage) next project

I think that's it but there may be one I'm forgetting. It's been a long week. Along with the bikes there are spares stashed in most sheds and attics. I have a very patient wife and she rides one of the Sportys. (affectionately called The Shortster)

There is also a Model A Tudor hotrod in production as well as a Mercedes Benz Unimog 1700L that needs some more work before going into service at my Electric Contracting business. Life gets in the way too much but like a lot of you I do the best I can with the spare time I have before I fall asleep. (not as easy as it used to be to stay awake)

Other than bikes my passion is my 32 Blackfin. Rebuilt from 2003-20006 and it is a fast fun fish magnet

45 years young, small business owner, grown kids both live out west.

Now a few answers to the ?

I'm hoping to have it done this summer but work will dictate the completion date.

I do all my own polishing. once your set up it's just a step by step process. Kind of relaxing for me actually.

The Thruxton is owned by one of my employees and he had it in the shop to do a rear fender elimination and air box removal kit. Nice bike and it is his first!

Hope this gives those who care some feel for what I'm all about.
Got to go polish some Z plates.
