New Dommie 600 connecting rods

We need a set of these for a tattered old girl who is about to get all freshened up.
Tried Norvil, Fair Spares, Walridge and Hemmings, no luck there. Anyone know of a possible source for these?

Carrillo do Custom Rods if youre in a decadant phase . :D the 88 & 99 rods should swap ? same journal Dia . :|

One cunning way to start is Bearing in suppliers manual , and see what other rod / vehical its common to , and look for one of them . :(
The one rule to the exception , is theres the exeption to each rule .

Hi Glen

http://www.thunderengineering.co.uk/_id ... _1051.html

Used by a lot of racers in the UK. Quality & resonable prices. Alloy rather than steel.

I can say that I notice a difference between my Commando engines fitted with steel con rods. Alloy rod engines dont feel as harsh.

Thanks Chris and Matt

Ill contact Thunder. I have tried Carillo in the past and they are very pricey.
The rods in the bike are al. Are steel rods all aftermarket jobs or did some Dommie or Commando engines come with steel rods from the factory?

ALL factory Dommies and Commandos came with alloy rods.

Apart from the early ones, that were 6" and 1.5" journals and a bit fragile if tuned a lot, they have a good reputation. Most 'rod problems' seem to be sludge trap related, or piston problems ?

It is noticeable though that the Domiracer 500's used rods with big journals, like for the 650s and later. You don't hear much though of tuned 99s, maybe someone could comment ?
You don't say what year it is, or what head it has either, that makes a difference...

Its a1956 model. I believe in 56 there was only one head, the new (then) alloy head.

HP rating is just 31,so they were very softly tuned.

Steel rods in the Short Stroke 750 Commando , according to the posts on it here ,

Another old geezer ran Fiat 500 or Bambina I think , maybe the 600 , piston in his 500T F'bed . He had run a twin too . the Fiat conrods may suit . possibly / not .
Wonder if there a ' conrod reconditioners ' with shelves full of sundry connecting rods . Wreckers carried ' spare rods ' centuries ago .
The one rule to the exception , is theres the exeption to each rule .

I nearly added a bit about race motors being different - and possibly unknown.
Nortons are reputed to have used titanium rods in some manxes too
( but they didn't have alloy rods anyway.)(and aren't twins !).

They occasionally appear on fleabay.

Most engine shops will 'resize' rods.
Finding one that knows what size 99 rods are may be a bit tricky though.
Crack testing them may not be such a bad idea though.

The caps were over torqued to about 500 ft lbs. It took a 3 foot extension and mucho force to break them free. The bike belongs to a friend. He has the bike at Vincent engine rebuilder John Mcdougall's shop.
The rods look fine, but due to the overtightening John does not want to reuse them.

He is a perfectionist, but then he is also the reason that the west coast Vincents tend to do big mileages without breakdowns.
