Mk3 Left Side Cover mounting without air box?

Postby GRM 450 » Fri Jul 03, 2009 6:06 pm

Hello learned masses,
How do you mount the Left Side Cover if the original Mk3 air box isn't used?
I've seen pictures of Mk3s using different carbs and air filters, but I'm not sure how the side cover is mounted.
Does it require a bracket to be made like an earlier model, which attaches to the frame gusset at the rear of the top tube?
Thanks in advance, Graeme.

Norvil do a stainless bracket for this purpose, but it wouldn't be too hard to make your own if you were inclined to do so.

Norvils locates to the frame, by being bolted onto the hole at the left of the frame gusset, and at the side panel end of the bracket, there is a threaded hole, where I on mine have mounted with a s/s bolt. It has three twists or bends in it, and looks quite smart although I did have to re-engineer slightlyto the desired shape to make mine fit.

I don't know if this will work, but hopefully, here is a picture.

Hello Reggie, I assume the front of the bracket fixes to the gusset left of the rear of the main frame tube Like earlier side covers, do you drill a hole in the front of the side cover to fix the rear of the bracket to the side cover?
So the whole side cover looks like an earlier side cover, (at the front anyway)

Hold on, your picture just poped up.

Thank you very much, a bit different than i had thought.

Thanks, Regards Graeme.

I made my MkIII's side cover "bracket" out of a standard grab rail clip (063798) which I mounted onto the frame tube, and I used an aftermarket horn bracket that just happened to be lying around without a job, for the arm of the bracket.

I drilled three holes in the bracket, the centre hole I filed to a rectangular shape to accept the standard (066307) Dzus "receptacle", which I fixed in position with two self-tapping screws.
I found that the assembly does need to be set so that it can move vertically by a small amount, so that the end of the Dzus fastener "stud" (066435) clears the receptacle when the panel is removed/refitted, and for that, I used a nylock nut not fully tightened on the clip bolt/bracket fitting to tension the clip, so that it will move when the bracket is pushed.

So far, I've not had the panel come loose anyway.

Thank you L.A.B, I see you're from the old school, screws neatly in line.
Is the black "plastic" Dzus receptical an original part?
Mine is a rusty speed clip with a large headed self tapper. Thats was how the side cover was attached to the air box.
I'll try and send a picture tommorrow.

Probably "more by luck than by judgment" I think!

Yes, as far as I know, the plastic Dzus and stud are the original MkIII parts:

http://www.nortonmotors.de/ANIL/Norton% ... 27&Part=15 part [15]

Or at least, that's what you will probably get if you order them?

[Edit] I don't know why the Roadster MkIII L/H panel is shown drawn with a lug for the Dzus in the parts diagrams, as I've never seen any panels with that lug?

Old Brits has a "packaged" solution to your problem; you'll have to dig a bit cause IE 8 would let me "discover" the exact wab page; you can buy the solution $64 or the bracket bare $45.

You probably want to go into town, and find a up to date Jap Bike store,
With a full spares department, a clean workshop, and kean young mechanics.
And ask them if theres a Grumpy Old Bloke out in the Hills, who knows how to fix Real Motorcycles.

This is how I did mine. Basically followed the form of the bracket fitted to the earlier panels but retaining the Mk111 Dzus rather than relocating it to the frame end as per previous. It's not stylish but it hardly shows and has given no problems.

I think i'll make-up something like this for my Mk 1, it's so awkward to get to the Dzus fastener in it's original position, I curse it every time I take the panel off!

The neatest way to do it is to just use the 750 side panel and Dzus fastener. It has a dog leg bracket with an "S" shaped wire retainer. The Dzus fastener is attached to the frame gusset to left of carbs in the hole that all frames have. This is an all metal D ring Dzus fastener not the later plastic thing.
