What could get past the fine mesh petcock screens that could cause damage?

I have the pre made Old Britts fuel line set up for my Mikuni, fits and works beautifully.

Another filter is insurance in case the petcock screen fails. I'm going to not put any additional filters on and see how it goes.
You probably want to go into town, and find a up to date Jap Bike store,
With a full spares department, a clean workshop, and kean young mechanics.
And ask them if theres a Grumpy Old Bloke out in the Hills, who knows how to fix Real Motorcycles.

Screens on the petcocks are pretty coarse so don't provide much protection except from fairly large chunks of crud. I have had too many fuel feed problems with old bikes so I don't take any chances now and always fit some sort of bronze filter in the fuel line. Mikunis have no filter at all so I think you need something in the line before it reaches the carb. Amals have screens but they are pretty coarse as well so I don't depend on them. An inline filter could be overkill but it can't hurt!

so I got the bike to idle. Both idle screw and air mixture screw are about 1.5 turns out.
here is the current problem. it is idling around 1.5 but will jump up to 2 for a few seconds and then drop back to 1-1.5. so it jumps on its own and then will suddenly drop down below 1 after awhile and die out. it will start now when warm without the choke on.
does this sound like an air leak? the pilot air mixture doesn't do alot it seems more affected by the idle screw. also hear small pops from exhaust sporadically but not too often
