instrument lights

Postby YING » Thu Feb 02, 2012 5:02 pm

Any tips on how to make the sockets for the instrument lights stay in place.74 Roadster with plastic bulb holders.
Is there a conversion for a metal plug or am I missing something? The tabs are all there but if you blow on them
they fall out.Any help would be appreciated.

if the small tabs on the holders are worn or missing---I have wrapped a bit of rubber tape around the holder and pushed it back into the hole---best to just replace the holders and get on with the next fix. You can always use epoxy or JB weld and make a more permanent repair---but ???

Interestingly, mine fit very loose and I have a brand new Andover Norton wiring harness. Maybe there's a manufacturing tolerance issue.

My '73 has metal holders and even after I bend them outward for a tighter fit, they seem to bend back in when I re-insert them and then sometimes I have to do it again. Steel isn't springy enough.

Duct tape. Naw, I tried that with one of the plastic holders I have. Kept coming off and I fashion 2 metal straps and a machine screw & nut and used the speedo cable as a support and clamped the bulb holder. Hasn't let loose.I'd post a picture but it may look like that I'm a backyard mechanic. Get a metal type bulb holder off of Evil Bay.

If you're talking about these bulb holders, mine are metal and I remember they used to be available at the auto store, but maybe not now?

Being Flucas , you can rob them out of old Hillman Hunters , Minis , and Cortinas . Pre 67 ish for the metal ones .

Millions made of the plastic , most never removed once . Can be an art leaning over bacward , gead in the boot droppings arm behind youre back into the instrument back through labrynth of braces & cables .
A worm / Twist squirm loose before knocking out free saves destroying them .

Plastic ones Id dose in Armourall before use , to aid elasticity .
Metal ones date to Rover 75s , Before Rover 90s .So Land Rovers 7 RangeRovers , if theres a ' car field ' handy .

Darn sight easier to take the dash / instruments out. And flog all the bolts screws fittings while youre at it .
Rubber grommets for wires / cables through bulkheads etc . Dunno If Triumph Herald front Discs 'd come in handy too .
The one rule to the exception , is theres the exeption to each rule .

Ok Bill, see you removed your post. Since I have spare time recovering from heart surgery for almost 3 weeks now. Here is what I did to keep the bulb holder in. Really can't notice it unless looking below the clock. Get your belly brace on.
