Where can I get some chromed out instrument cups to replace the black ones on smiths 850? Are the ones on the earlier 750's the same size?

The earlier short alloy clock holders are just that and not chromed. You can, if you wish polish the black ones. I believe that short ones are available new but the form is not as good as the original period items.

Smiths clocks will fit in both types but the long ones were introduced to accomodate the deeper Veglia clocks which first appeared in 1973. The Veglias had a trip function and were initially listed for the Interstate but all models were fitted with the long black holders.

Just bought a set of polished alloy buckets from Commando Specialties on eBay. They are made in the UK by RGM.

I replaced the longer black ones with the shorter alloy ones on my 73 850. I think they look a lot better. FWIW/YMMV!

Norvil in the UK advertise a "long polished clock holder" part No. 069385 @ £36.11 GBP each. They are the same style as the black long clock holders and so will require the plastic cover at the bottom to finish them off. So it depends what look you want, short polished or long polished with a black plastic cover. There's a nice picture of one on their website.
