Glass replacement on gauges

Postby Derek » Tue Jan 17, 2012 4:51 pm

Hello,

I am working on a 74 850 amd I have a nice set of gauges with broken glass. Can anyone tell me how to get the chrome ring off to replace the glass? I'm sure I am missing something simple but I just can't figure it out and I don't want to break it.

Thanks!
Derek

Hi Derik,

Welcome.

Hmm, too many threads on this one. Commando Specialties has replacement glass, bezels and hardware. I should keep notes, but you may have to search on Smith's gauges. I replaced a bezel by hand, most likely if you remove the bezel, it's gone. Get a new one. They can be replaced by hand, but better by machine in which case you will have to send it out for probably over $150USD. If you can't find the thread let me know, I can find it.

Undoubtedly L.A.B. will have the info at his finger tips.

Ugh, me too as I cracked spdo lens while putting on windshield supports and didn't notice in time L side had shifted over the glass while bumping R side to align. Didn't notice till after shield was mostly done. ugh. Can't leave out in the snow now.

I'll get the glass then tedium pry off and try the lay flat on pad and careful pound and press and squeeze back on method.
Throw yourself at the ground and miss!

I have stocks of glasses, and the 2 rubbers, the flat one and the V one, no bezels currently in production though.
I was waiting for the chrome plating to be finished for the bezels before I offered them as a kit.
