Ok, motor back together fine. (Different cases, crank, rods, pistons, guides,valves, etc... but at least I could use the barrels and the RH4 head!

I digress...

Things were moving along swimmingly and it was time to get the frame/cradle/swinger, etc over to Mr. Sandblaster. Well, after the frame gets picked up, we get to looking... we should've perhaps tossed a pint or three instead. Does anyone besides me see anything in this picture that would cause you to want to grab a plasma cutter and cut this frame into many little pieces so that it could never be used as a motorcycle frame again? Ok, maybe a little dramatic, but still not pretty. Tell me what you think of that top tube...



Anyone have a post-combat/pre-MK!!! frame that is actually useable that they may want to get rid of? A title would be the tits, but I'll take what I can get.

Why would you need to do that? Looks like someone did a first rate job already. Although, the cuts look more like a hacksaw was used. I am sure the frame is still absolutely in perfect alignment.

While alignment is important, I would be even more concerned that the welding job was done properly. I would also want to know why it was done at all. If no other damage is seen, why was it done? Does the frame have the same length, head angle, tank mounts, as stock? Could someone have started a chopper or rat and then reverted back to stock?
Maybe the bike was hit by lightning.

So sorry you have been caught out, this is one of the risks in buying bikes/goods on evilBay.
Just by looking at the photos is impossible to confirm if the frame is fit for purpose, you really need an expert opinion from someone like a chassis repairer or a frame builder.

Why do you need a title with a new frame? Unless the number is stamped on it. Aren't most numbers stamped on the plate, and if you transferred the plate who would know?

I can look at it and see significant voids in the welds and such. This frame isn't fit to be used as a boat anchor in my opinion. This frame is very likely to get someone killed if used and it sure as hell isn't going to be me.

Live and learn on the eBay thing...

I don't necessarily need the title... just a wish list item I guess and as long as I'm being greedy...

If your bad frame is titled you're fine.

Just get a replacement frame and transfer the VIN plate.

Now to find a replacement frame...

My spare frame has knackered down tubes and is missing the steering head tube. If worse came to worse, yours and mine could make 1 good frame, but would be some work.

You are right, this as been raked for a custom thingy.

I have had a couple of PM's over the past couple of months from folks asking if I have given up. That answer is a resounding no. Maybe two more weeks should see this bike back on the road. Some current pics...








It's been a long, expensive winter. I'll post more pics in the next couple of weeks when it goes for its maiden voyage.

I bought a 1974 850 Roadster about nine years ago. The previous owner wasn't much of a mechanic but I knew the reputation of the builder. It didn't matter, I ran into the same frame situation as yours. The welds were of good quality but the neck had evidence of being raked for a chopper then put back to stock angle. The plan was to replace the frame as soon as the bike was mechanically sorted out. Well, I'm still using the Frankenstein frame. In fact, this Norton handles better that all my other ones. I realize there are many factors that make a bike handle well (even more so with a Commando). I just suggest not giving up until a test ride (after a little re-welding work).
