On my Commando street endurance rides, I covered quite a chunk of his route, but didn't cross into Scotland or south of the Midlands. I had my fun in the western Lake District. I went from Marston Road through downtown Wolverhampton and then took the A449 to where the M6 used to start at Gailey. Full song then on the M6 to Lancaster, where it ended back in 1967. From there it was the A6 to a gas stop in Lancaster or Carnforth, then to Levens Bridge. Here it got more interesting, taking A590 to Newby Bridge then A595 to Ravenglass. Then the real fun started - white road over the Hardknott and Wrynose passes into Ambleside. From Ambleside, another white road to join the A592 to head via Patterdale and Watermillock to Penrith. From Penrith to Carlisle on the A6, then the A66 through Brough, Bowes to Scotch Corner, where I took the A1 (Great North Road) south through Wetherby, Pontefract, east of Doncaster and on until the A46 north of Newark. The A46 took me to the outskirts of Leicester, where I picked up the A47 to Hinkley. From Hinckley it was the A5 to Gailey and then A449 back to Wolverhampton.

It was just over 500 miles and it took about 8 to 9 hours depending on traffic. I think the other regular rider may have taken a more southerly route from Leicester, using the A45 round the south side of Coventry and Birmingham, then through West Bromwich and Dudley to the A449 at Wombourne and then north to the factory.
