Dyna Coil Mount

Postby swooshdave » Wed May 19, 2010 8:45 pm

Sadly for all of you I got a couple parts shipments. That means a flood of posts from me. You have been warned.

First. Dyna Coil mounting.

Image
I'm really leaning to some thing like this CNW setup.

Image
Old Britts mounts theirs like this.

The biggest difference I can see is that it looks like CNW solid mounts the coil and Old Britts rubber mounts theirs. Is this a concern with these modern coils. I mean, they use them on Harleys...

Anyone have pics of their coil mounts?
You probably want to go into town, and find a up to date Jap Bike store,
With a full spares department, a clean workshop, and kean young mechanics.
And ask them if theres a Grumpy Old Bloke out in the Hills, who knows how to fix Real Motorcycles.

First way tucks coil up neat under tank and its about shock proof
plus dear Sir this is Commandos were into, so chassis
and what ever it carries is isolated from damaging vibration.

First way is how I just did Peel but by epoxy two blocks of
Al as gussets - frame to tank mount plate - but with studs
sticking out so coil slips on and stays till I nut her up.
But Peel tank is moved back 3/4" so may not work on yours.

I figure the most solid mass attached to frame the more
its inertia resists transmitting nuance engine oscillation and
road texture and wind buffet.

Don't you want the coil in the air flow? The plug wires look so perfect.

I solid mounted my Accel Epoxy Coil on my Shovelhead. Never had a problem with vibration. It was solid mounted originally too.

Dave,
If you like how it looks, hook it up!

I am behind the curve on coils I guess, still trying to figure out what to do about so many other issues. Did you compare the Dyna coil to the CNW coil? Anything other than cost? Assume you are going EI...Tri-spark?

Dyna coil was about $80 from Old Britts. PVL coils that can replace the stock ones are about $40 each. So it's a wash, except with the Dyna you don't need the resistor or other crap. Fewer things to go wrong.

And I'll be using a Boyer.

My further thoughts on 1st mount is,
gives nicer routing of plug leads, I like them to come out
of nowhere to appear wrapping around from rear loop to plugs.

These coils arn't hardly working hard on 7000 rpm twins,
so if lolly gagging or idling, they ain't got much watts to
radiate, while going with purpose give turbulent air assist.

But my main reason is vanity for least clutter blocking the view
though the Commando's profile.

I'd like to get boots to cover the raw trigger terminals,
must be some Harley or air craft or marine, lawnmower item
to suit so On the hunt.

Do you think the cardboard will be strong enough?

But seriously the coil sit right in there like it was meant to be. And the plug wires just love it too.

Any suggestions on how to fab it for real?

That would be 3 brackets ( 1 welded , 2 bolted ) + 10 bolts to hold up 1 coil .
Surely there must be a simpler way ?
Why not remove the original coil bracket and weld a tab on the tank support bracket ?

Swooshdave,

Coil wires are inanimate objects. They are not capable of love. Is the bike talking to you?

Walk away from the bike. Hug you wife and that adorable kid.

Remember, when you talk to your bike, it should remain silent (except the exhaust).

You would have to paint 'em to match unless the red worked into the scheme. You can also buy cans of liquid rubber stuff for dipping tool handles and make your own.

Dammit, I think you're right. Well, 2 brackets, the other one that's welded on is to hold the tank.

But I was going to use the side of the bracket to hold the turnsignals...
