I want to remove the folding part on my 1971 lever for rechroming. It looks like there's a stub that's peened over holding it together but it's hard to tell. How does it come apart? Can I grind that off and replace it with a bolt?

That would be a dome nut 06-0550 that with 04-0433 (spring washer) and a 00-0010 (plain washer) . These hold the pin on 04-2934. Parts books are wonderful.

Weird, the end of mine is not a nut. There's no flats on it, it's smooth and chromed like the rest of the lever. Also, the flat steel washer has a thin plastic or rubber washer that's not shown between it and the pedal.
Guess I'll give it a twist and see what happens.

It sounds as if you have one of the period (ie 1970s) pattern items referred to in the NOC Service Notes.

Probably retained by a roll pin and likely to be of Italian origin was the theory at the time.

That's what is is. If you have a vice pad it and chuck the lever in. Then select a punch just the diameter of the roll pin, and punch it out. I just did that with one a couple of weeks ago and it was pretty easy. Watch out for the little springs and ball bearing.
I prefer not to hammer this on the bike myself as you might cause some damage.

Mine is a mid-'74, s/n 316 something-or-other; thought it might be an oddball from the factory. It was on the bike when I bought it in '75, so I always assumed it was OEM. What a great forum, I got answers to questions I didn't know I should ask!

If you get a chance to compare that to some of the other types the head locks way differently too. I also wondered if they were oem. At this point I think I've owned about 6 Norton kick starts and this is the only one I've seen like this myself.

I can't see any evidence of a roll pin or screw. There's a hole in the pedal but it doesn't give access to anything on the stem underneath. It's looking better and better the way it is.

Can you get a closeup of the joint?

The roll pin was fairly thin on mine. I just used a punch that just fit the hole. I expect there might be some dirt in there, something has to be holding it on. Do you want me to post pix of it dissambled tonight?

Poor pictures. I cleaned off everything with brake cleaner, just nothing there. The stub on the end looks wrought not machined. I'm wondering if it was peened.

That does look a bit different than mine. Perhaps the hole is just for putting in a spring and ball? It is possible they just crushed the top down a bit in a press. Does it show an increase in diameter?

Hi littlefield,I have a 74 MK11A and have the same kickstart lever and my bike was originally a Interstate with low pipes i'm wondering if these were only on them? because since the pipes were changed to peashooters it fouled the silencer so had to be bent!!! (for clearance) or are they just cheap aftermarket? I must admit i hav'nt tried to take it apart as it's been ok in use apart from the rubber that keeps moving.let us know if you get it apart!!!!..............cheers Andy
